Captain LeRoy Raley United States Army chaplain currently in Italy earns the Silver Star for gallantry on May 26 1944 near Carano Italy. He led litter squads under heavy fire evacuating wounded while artillery and mortar shells fell, saving lives and inspiring his unit. Raley entered service from Oklahoma and has Bronze Star and Purple Heart decorations.

August Garlichs 65 Buried at Sharp
Funeral services for August Garlichs 65 were held at 2 p m Wednesday November 29 1944 in the Sharp Presbyterian church. He died Monday in New Braunfels where he had lived the past year. Surviving are his widow Ann Garlichs a son Sgt Hans Garlichs with the American Fifth Army in Italy and a daughter Margrit Garlichs. Interment was in Sharp cemetery. The Marek Burns Funeral Home directed arrangements. A New Braunfels minister conducted the services.

Sgt. M Wimberly of Milano is recovering at a U S Army General Hospital in England with a fractured ankle after diving from a German tank in Brittany near Rennes while en route to Paris. He has the Purple Heart and is expected to return to duty. His surgeon First Lt Jesse N Borden of Baltimore reported the injury occurred during a hedgerow skirmish and rescue by a fellow soldier with a bazooka. Luther C. Gunnels, tail gunner of a Flying Fortress in the Army Air Corps, died November 16 1944 from wounds in battle over Italy. He served 17 months overseas and fought in Sicily, stationed on Corsica. He is survived by widow Naomi and by his parents Mr and Mrs M C Gunnels of Galveston with family ties to Hanover and Cameron.
