Baylor's Tom Parrish told a Scout group that Scouting stands for mental, physical, social and spiritual development. He opposed Nazism as uncivilized and framed Scouting as civilization in conflict with untamed nature, beyond mere Eagle Scout prep.
The speaker argues scouts face choices outside the handbook and must handle good, better and best. He says institutions should teach positive handling of a negative world and Scouting should address both nature and people as a composite reality, here and now.
The Cameron Police Department announces enforcement of the city ordinance banning shooting fireworks within city limits with fines from 1 to 100 dollars. Fireworks may be bought in town but must be lit elsewhere. Chief Felipe Martinez urges careful driving and car locking to prevent holiday thefts and accidents.
Rockdale Rep. Dan Kubiak said he will not run against W. R. Poage in the 11th District as long as Poage seeks re election. He noted he would file immediately if Poage steps down. Kubiak, chair of the House Education Committee, eyed the post but waited after Poage announced plans to run again.
Felix Matula of Cameron received the Tejas District Award of Merit at the Boy Scout Recognition banquet in Rockdale. The honor, first given in 1972, recognizes unselfish service to Scouting. Matula is Scoutmaster of Troop 752.
The Central Texas Council of Governments ASAP begins field testing portable breath alcohol testers in Temple and Milam County with Killeen starting November 23. The instrument by Borg Warner fits a cigar box, runs on rechargeable batteries, and uses pass warn fail indicators. Results and acceptance will guide future use in DWI arrests during 30 day test periods supervised by Ed Jarratt.
United Production Company of Houston drilled three wells and staked a fourth wildcat in Milam County near Milano in the Pemberton-Navarro oil field. The No. 1 Batte discovery led to Nos. 2 and 3 and a fourth test, with tests under way and logs showing 20 feet of Navarro C oil saturation. Wayne C. Pemberton assembled a 7200 acre lease block and transferred it to United Production, boosting local Milam economy.
The Cameron city council awarded the paving contract for downtown streets to Bandas Industries at 1.12 dollars per square yard after opening three bids. The meeting also opened bids for a new dump truck a dump truck cab and chassis and a front end loader with low truck bids noted.
Dr. Sidney H. Richardson from Cameron was elected to active membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, joining a national group of more than 34 000 family doctors. The AAFP requires 150 hours of continuing medical education every three years.
Rockdale resident Billy Pearson was arrested in Rockdale by Patrolmen Milton Wright and Le Roy Broadus on charges of destroying multiple highway signs along FM 487 between Cavilla and Rockdale Friday night. Bond set at 5 000 dollars, he was released on his own recognizance. A separate one vehicle crash occurred about 9 Sunday night five miles west of Hearne on Highway 79 when a pickup with a trailer ran off a curve into a ditch. Tony Buzan of Thorndale sustained minor injuries. the truck burned but the trailer did not.
