Marvel Bath House Destroyed by Fire

M K Culver manager of the Marvel Hot Baths at Thorndale was taken to Taylor Hospital Friday noon after severe burns when flames engulfed the bath house around 3 30 in the afternoon. The building half a mile east of Thorndale on the Thorndale Rockdale highway had housed a health resort attracting visitors from across the state. Culver escaped the blaze, attempted to extinguish it with a fire extinguisher, then sought help after finding the phone out of order. A nearby road contractor alerted the fire department but they couldn't save the building. The fire likely started from a kerosene lamp in a sweat box explosion. Damages are estimated at 3500 with partial insurance. Culver received first aid and was hospitalized in Taylor. He plans to rebuild a larger, modern bath house by early next year.
