The Jones Prairie United States Post Office was robbed Monday night when intruders blew the vault and stole about 8160, including 60 in government funds. Tom Stidham store funds were partly taken, and ammo from the store was reported missing. Police and postal inspectors investigated with J R Hays and Cameron postmaster notified.
Herald readers in the territory see Safeway Stores greet buyers with better buying opportunities this week. The national food house promotes timely foods and appeals to Cameron shoppers, inviting thousands of readers to visit the big Cameron store.
Funeral services for Bart Matthews, 41, farmer and truck driver, were held Sunday at 4 p m from North Elm church in Cameron. Interment followed in North Elm cemetery. Matthews, who lived four miles north of Cameron, was killed Saturday night while passing a poultry truck on the highway between Temple and Rosebud. Ed Lovick and Willie Ponder, riding in Matthews’s truck, were bruised. Matthews was born in Arkansas and came to Texas as a young man. He was married in 1918 and survived by his wife, a son Hubert, two daughters Irma and Ellie, his father W D Matthews, four brothers and two sisters.
Three indictments pursued by the state were continued Monday to the January term. A. W. Leyendecker charged with murder driving while intoxicated and failing to render aid. O. J. Cunningham charged with assault with intent to murder. Erskine Hill charged with driving while intoxicated. Leyendecker allegedly killed Ora Lucas at Rockdale. Cunningham accused of attempting to shoot Fay Horton near Rockdale.
Two deaths tied to a truck collision near the Baskin place east of the city. Ella Cooks and her daughter died. others injured. Harry Rogers, driver, faced suspension and pending charges as investigators pressed for details.
The Herald will publish its annual Christmas Edition on December 18 and asks school children and residents to send letters to Santa Claus for printing. Letters from rural districts are welcome. Santa Claus will visit Cameron on Friday, December 6.
Santa Claus will parade through Cameron Friday afternoon as thousands line the streets for the annual event. Secretary Paden of the Cameron Chamber of Commerce coordinates preparations for the visit, with residents invited to join the festive parade.
John Edwin Todd prominent stock farmer of Milam County died November 26 at his country home near Maysfield after a two week battle with pneumonia. Funeral services were led by Rev. N. iD. Timmerman, burial in Little River cemetery. He was born January 12, 1859 in Polk County Georgia, moved to Milam as a child, and lived on the same farm until death. He was a Baptist and a Mason known for helping neighbors.
Geo Mayo Newton, a Cameron Hospital patient, was badly hurt in a Wednesday night hit and run on a Buerkheim highway. Doctors report a spinal injury and skull fracture with possible neck damage. Father Dr W R Newton Sr and brother Dr W K R Newton Jr watched over him as police seek the fleeing vehicle. No arrests reported.
Cameron welcomes BFS Stewart Jr son of Mr and Mrs B Stewart born recently to join the family. He is expected to play a key role in managing Stewart Grocery as duties begin in a few days. The Motherland babe is progressing well. Stewart shows improved readiness for work.
Sunday December service at the Episcopal Church includes Holy Communion and a reminder for parishioners to attend as announced in the church bulletin.
Postmaster J R Hays disclosed plans for a county offices building to house county agents and provide space at a projected cost of 12250 with county funding of 1800 or less. County Judge Kemp is advising, while Cameron could obtain a 21000 marketing shed and slaughter pen with federal matching funds. Milam and Cameron counties seek government support amid limited prior aid.
Green and Boedeker Stores launch a holiday expansion sale in Cameron with broader stock and new buying opportunities. Leland Green says the event expands seasonal offerings and emphasizes stronger assortments for the holiday period.
John Jeter of Cameron married Mise Morreon in Kansas City Missouri on Thursday. The couple returned to Cameron Sunday and will reside there. Jeter, well known locally, is son of Dire RK Jeter and works as a bookkeeper at the Jover Launder Company. He was born and raised here, graduated from Yee High School, and attended Texas University at Austin where the romance began.
Milam county residents go to the polls Thursday to decide repeal of prohibition after a 1917 dry status. The vote could tax and regulate traffic if repeal passes, while the grand jury investigates the Saturday night killings of two Black women and a truck driver injured.
The city schedules a December 27 bond election for 36,000 in securities to finance a physical education and vocational building at Yo High School. The plan is touted as the top school improvement in years, with a tax levy to retire the bonds by 1940. The state will contribute twenty thousand dollars toward the project.

The party included Mrs F O Post and son Ralph, Mrs E G Shew of Waco, Mrs Allen Purnfey of Anson, daughters and nieces of Mr Abbey B E Davis and Sallie Phillips. Mrs Hubert Ard of Coleman visited her mother Mrs Byrd and others.
