A young Mexican American man fled on foot from pursuing officers in a wooded area near Caldwell after abandoning a car stolen from in front of Rockdale State Bank. The wrecked vehicle was recovered and returned to owners Mr. and Mrs. Don Roddam of Rockdale.
Emergency loans are available through the Farmers Home Administration for farmers ranchers and aquaculture operators affected by drought from April 15 1977 to October 19 1977. Applications are due May 23 1978 for physical losses and November 25 1978 for production losses at the Cameron FmHA office. Loans cover actual and nonactual losses with terms 3 or 5 percent for actual losses and varying maturities for other uses.
A $25 gift from Yee High School student council raises the Wheels for Edwin Marek Jr fund to 15053.50. Marek, paralyzed in an auto accident, awaits a specially equipped van costing over $6,000 with Texas Rehabilitation covering equipment. Funds are held at two Cameron banks.
Cameron Rotary Club will hear Fred P. Bergeron Texas area manager for Alcoa and Texas Chemical Council president speak at noon on Wednesday December 7. He will report on Alcoa Central Texas smelter near Rockdale where more than 300 workers are on multi‑million dollar projects aimed at expanding lignite mining and doubling Sandow power plant capacity. Rockdale Works marked its 25th anniversary in November.
U S Senator John Tower met residents in Cameron to discuss HEW guidelines for hospitals and farmer woes. He pledged to push back on the Health Services section of the 1974 act or seek modifications, arguing the rules threaten rural medical access.
TP&L announces the NEW E-OK program merging the 135-Point Energy Efficiency Plan with E-OK initiatives from DP&L TESCO and the National Energy Watch. Starting January 1 the program offers loan guidance for home projects, insulation info, energy inspections, and cost saving estimates, with eligibility tied to points earned.
