The Cameron Herald notes a large batch of copies circulated to former residents and renters. The piece reflects on unseasonal weather, rain in Central Texas, and upcoming Santa visits as Cameron decorates early for Christmas amid earlier holidays.
The mummified body of Marie O'Day, a 12 year missing night club entertainer, will be exhibited in Cameron for two days, Friday and Saturday, December 2 and 3. The police sponsor the display inviting the public, doctors, nurses, and undertakers to view the preserved body, claimed to be aided by Great Salt Lake salinity. A van will park at the southeast corner of the Court House Square for viewing with an expected gate take.
Dale Rinn of Cameron and Houston was injured by a accidental pistol discharge in Cameron. The 22 caliber gun struck the floor during deerhunt preparations with his grandfather Dale Fuller, firing into his calf just below the knee. He is in St Edward's Hospital for treatment.
Cameron beams with street decorations as the 1960 Santa Parade approaches on December 8. Texas Power and Light crews finished erecting multi colored streamers in the business district while the Cameron Junior Chamber of Commerce reworked the overall display. Chamber Manager Jack Dubois says retailers will stay open until 7 30 p m on parade days through the season. Lights will be turned on for the first time this week ahead of the parade drawing interest from county and Cameron groups.
Cameron Chamber of Commerce forecasts a large 1960 parade with Yee High and Rogers High bands, numerous organizations, floats and Santa Claus. Prizes will be awarded for top four floats. Parade forms at Santa Fe Depot around 3 30 p m and proceeds through downtown Cameron. Entries due by Monday December 5. Santa meets crowd at courthouse square after the procession.
Emil Otto Roesler 72 died suddenly November 23 of a heart attack at his Route 1 Burlington home. Funeral services were held Friday in the United Church of Christ Ben Arnold with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Roesler, born in Washington County and a 51 year Milam County resident, is survived by his wife a daughter Mrs Joe Zajicek of Buckholts a son Walter J Roesler of Waco two sisters Mrs Hattie Roehling and Mrs Lillie Neumann of Brenham two brothers C R Roesler of New Braunfels and Adolph Roesler of Brenham and three grandsons.
Mrs Otto Wied 60 of Cameron died Saturday afternoon at home. Funeral services were at 2 p m Monday at United Church of Christ of Ben Arnold with Rev Gerald R Cobb and Rev Robert Kalkbrenner officiating. Burial at Woodland Cemetery Rosebud. Survivors include her husband two daughters a brother two step brothers a sister a step mother and three grandchildren. Pallbearers were nephews.
Seven lettermen and five six footers return to the Yeo men basketball squad with Jack Larimore as new head coach. Barkemeyer leads the forwards as two year letterman. McClaren tops centers at six four plus. guards include Woodum Griswold Morgan and Dillon. Larimore will pick starters from a six-man group.
Milam County TB Association thanks supporters while Walter White urges late contributions. The group sends $2.00 monthly for needy TB patients and helps with medicine, clothing, and occasional transportation in hardship cases. White promotes using colorful seals to adorn Christmas packages.
Mrs K K Robbins is the featured speaker for the Cameron Parent Teachers Association meeting tonight at 7 30 p m in the Ben Milam Cafetorium. She will address PTA members and friends on Material Values. Controlling or Controlling.
The First Presbyterian Church voted to call Rev. Eugene Strickland as pastor and to buy the Roy Wright home at 505 East 6th St. as a parsonage. Strickland, previously assistant at Westminister Church in Lubbock since March 1959, has pastored churches in Plain Dealing Louisiana Junction Texas and Ashland Kentucky.
Scott Mitchan three year old son of Mr and Mrs Gene Mitchan is at Scott and White Hospital Temple after eye surgery Tuesday morning. A pencil accident while playing with his brother Eugene Albert four caused the injury when a sling shot type gun ricocheted a pencil into Scott eye. Doctors say eye salvage remains uncertain.
Dillon and Bobby Elliott, former Yee stars, join three fellow Del Mar Vikings on the Pioneer Conference all conference squad. Dillon adds a second straight honor after previously earning center honors last season. Corky Bloomfield joins them as an unanimous pick at fullback.
Head coach Jaddy Larimore announced a 12 game season plus tournament contests for the Yeemen basketball team. The schedule lists A and B team games including Rogers Belton Rosebud Marlin Rockdale Caldwell Hearne A&M Consolidated and Rockdale as opponents with tournaments at Rosebud and Rockdale.
Milam County Farm Bureau schedules an 8 p m general membership meeting at the Farm Bureau office with a 7 p m board meeting preceding it. Delegates to the state convention will report as part of the agenda.
Yee High School Yoemen defeated Rogers Eagles 48 to 37 in a non district game. David Barkemeyer scored 21 points to lead Cameron, with Pat Dillon Griswold and Jimmy McClaren contributing 26 combined. Perry Harbour led Rogers with 13 points.
The Yoe High School B team beat Rogers 32 to 15 at Yoe High School Gym last Tuesday. Junior Dan Brashear led Cameron with 13 points and an outstanding performance. Tom Moody followed with 9 points, while Merlin Lester and Bob Dymke added 4 each. Rogers scorers included Davis with 6 and Castellio, Knight, Mayer with 4, 4, and 1 respectively.
Frances Villines tops the Sunshine League with a 433 series and 170 game. Leader Department Store wins both team honors with 1809 series and 653 in a single game. Evelyn Burke has high weekly average at 144, with Lillie Peck 138 and Ann Schattle 135. Standings show Sunshine League bowling results.
Irene Mees bowled a 201 game to build a high series of 482 in the After Noon Singles league. Other series totals in the league follow but are not listed in full.
Dr. W R Newton reports deer are plentiful as a one day hunt proceeds on his 3000 acre ranch between Caldwell and Milano. A $25 donation funds the Newton Memorial Hospital and three hunters were slated for Thanksgiving Day with additional seekers from the Central Texas area.
Yoe High and Ada Henderson elected queen candidates for the annual school carnival. Marilyn Hughes top senior, Lanette Laffere junior, Carolyn Griswold sophomore, and Saundra Fuller freshman queens were named. The carnival at Yoe High Gym has two sessions 2 45 to 3 45 PM and 6 PM to 9 PM with a 9 PM carnation. A new two vote method was chosen by the student council. Ada Henderson candidates include Kheatre Leath fourth grade Rebecca Smith fifth grade Linda Smith sixth grade Peggy Slovak seventh grade and Shirley Gold eighth grade.
City workmen continue drainage improvements in Cameron with street leveling on East Eighth Street and other streets. Stop signs replace metal traffic buttons at many intersections downtown and in residential areas. Construction also proceeds at First Baptist Church, Newton Memorial Hospital, and Citizens National Bank drive-in facility. Public Works Supt. J B Earle praises property owner cooperation as graders dig and clear ditches to improve water flow.
