Cameron Chamber Road Officials Barbecue Plans

About 150 road boosters and officials will attend the Cameron Chamber of Commerce roads committee barbecue at Wilson Ledbetter Park. C B Thames district engineer for the State Highway Dept will head a delegation of state road officials. A general discussion on Milam County highway needs planning and allocations is expected with tickets for sale at the Cameron Chamber office.

One car crash injures Houston man near Cameron

Rowland Hernandez of Houston is in critical condition at Newton Memorial Hospital after a Tuesday night single vehicle crash on US 77 seven miles south of Cameron. His 7 year old son, the only other occupant, was released with minor injuries. Hernandez swerved to avoid two calves, struck a culvert, and suffered severe chest skull and brain injuries. An ambulance transported him to the hospital around 6 45. The same page reports Cameron School Board approving a 550 530 budget with a 1 50 per valuation based on 8 7 million assessed value including a 10 percent increase for O J Thomas classrooms. Local taxes total 141 341 with maintenance 104 433 and debt service 26 108. Major item is salaries totaling 378 120. Other line items include 18 000 furniture, 19 000 buildings, 43 029 debt service and interest, 20 660 pupil transport, and 23 708 district admin costs. Revenue sources include state per capita 129 996 and foundation funds 255 929 with total education revenue 388 425. No federal revenue. Non revenue receipts include 19 000 loan and 3 000 property sale. Total anticipated revenue with balances: 559 603.

Twister Strikes Sharp Community Causing Widespread Damage

A small twister struck the Sharp and San Gabriel communities on Tuesday afternoon August 22, damaging barns garages and trees. Property owners Ernest Backhaus Henry Von Gonten Val Nemec Carl Laffere Oscar Mueck and others reported extensive damage. A chimney roof and siding were blown from homes including that of F A Abel and George Gamble, with a barn blown down and windows shattered.

Bryan buys Snowhite Laundry and Dry Cleaners with American Laundry owner Roland Dansby and former Snowhite owner Ray Lester announcing the deal. Sale completed Monday as workers moved many machines to Bryan. Snowhite’s plant closed in Cameron where operations had run since 1947. Homer and Mrs. Conley to operate under Dansby. Lions Club Sells Yoemen Booster Pennants for Scholarship

Cameron Lions Club announces Yoemen Booster Pennants are on sale with proceeds funding the Lions Club scholarship fund. A $250 scholarship will be awarded to a Yee High School student, first in May 1962, based on later announced qualifications.

Shuffield Appeal Denied After Hearing in Cameron Case

Hubert W. Shuffield 66 of Cameron had a motion for a new trial denied after a Tuesday hearing. Shuffield was sentenced to 40 years in the state penitentiary for the shooting death of Jesse Kirk Jr. at Cameron.

TP and L Manager Visits in Cameron

John L. Murchison TP and L Company new manager of its Southern Division visited Cameron this week. He met Cameron business leaders and was introduced to Hen ry Liebman TP and L district manager. Murchison succeeded W Garland Button as division manager and lives in Waco formerly led TP and L Waco district.

Lasting memory of Gause General Store and Mrs Varner

In Gause Milam County the General Store has served the town for six decades. Mrs. Varner known for her charity and motto Always be helping somebody else continues to influence the community as the store remains run by her son G R Varner. She is the lone surviving original member of the Gause Methodist Church and recalls local history from the Gause Gazette to the fire that burned the school.
