County Commissioners Court schedules a public hearing at 10 a.m. August 31 on a proposed 554000 dollar county budget. The plan keeps the 95 cent per hundred valuation, with Milam County showing 81 million estimated serviceable valuation and 69,975 dollars in net securities.
Milam County is not shown in any four nearby census divisions on the Census Bureau Texas Population Report maps. The omission appears from last fall’s completed census, with a note that Milam’s maps were not included. The piece also discusses Civil Defense preparedness debates in Milam and related county efforts.
Sixteen year old Ann Bowman, an exchange student in West Germany, writes of her joyful first weeks living with the von Schoeler family in Augsburg and traveling along the Rhine and to Neuhaus. Her counterpart Dagmar von Schoeler adjusts to Cameron life with the Bowmans as both families share a year of cross cultural exchange.
Temperatures in Cameron ranged from 95 to 67 over the past week. Data lists daily highs and lows with dates in August and shows highs from 94 to 98 and lows between 67 and 73.
The Cameron Chamber of Commerce directors endorsed the Elm Creek Watershed project and set a September 23 vote. Property owners in the watershed from Cameron toward Troy will decide on a 25 cent per 100 valuation bond issue of up to $100,000 to fund watershed control and soil conservation.
The Cameron School Board hired Fort Worth architect Preston M. Geren to design a four classroom wing for O J Thomas School. Budgets show costs may exceed $30 000, with a public hearing set for 8 pm Tuesday at Ben Milam School.
Milam County Sheriff Carl Black charged five suspects from Waco in the Sharp store robbery that netted about 500 dollars in groceries and dry goods last Wednesday night. The arrested are Joe A Mata Mary Ann Mata Phil Lopez George Mata and Martin Rios. Mrs Mata posted 1000 bail while the four men remain in Milam County Jail.
County Agent J. D. Moore announces a cotton defoliation demonstration at the Joe P. Mueck farm south of Cameron. The event at 8 30 a.m. Tuesday will showcase several new materials used in the setup last week.
Milam County collectors Basil and Mrs. McGregor run a home antique shop with 700 arrowheads and numerous relics dating to the 1920s. Their Norwood glass punch bowl and purple gilt bowl stand out along with Bisque dolls, a German clock, and a 75 year old Gone with the Wind lamp.
Gilbert G. Terry a Minerva resident died from injuries after a three car collision near Cameron on August 16. He served as chairman of the county ASC Committee for six years and had been involved with the program for 20 years. Funeral services were held at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Chapel in Rockdale with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife a son a daughter two brothers three sisters and several relatives.
Cameron Fire Marshal John Eanes urged residents to clean lots and check homes after six alarms last week. Fires included a 1950 Studebaker on Arm strong Used Car lot and a neon sign at Berniece's Dress Shop, plus grass and wiring fires. He warned to extinguish fires fully and promised inspections to find danger spots.
The Cameron Chamber of Commerce Highways and Good Roads Committee hosts a public barbecue Thursday night August 31 at Wilson Ledbetter Park. Tickets are sold at the chamber office with committee members also offering tickets. District Engineer C B Thames of the State Highway Department will attend and discuss Milam County highway needs and allocations.
The local National Guard unit announces new policies effective September 1 1961 enlistees must be under 20 and non-prior service. Six months active duty for training is suspended through December 31 1961. Applications accepted through August 31 with future enlistments limited to 17 18 or 19 year olds and prior service.
