A rancher notes repeated price increases on new pickups. He explains that after paying above basic price for multiple purchases, he approached a dealer with a humorous accounting line describing the cost, ending with figures 60 300 and 895.
Rosebud city marshal John Curtis and Deputy Marshal Charles West submitted letters of resignation last week. Curtis said he lacks support from the present administration and deputy West cited inability to continue the job while pleasing the city council.
The Thorndale board discusses an early November bond vote to fund an elementary building and a bond hall at an estimated cost of 550000, requiring a 32.5 percent tax increase. A June bond referendum for 995000 was defeated.
A 28 year old Sherwood Shores man and six Burnet juveniles were arrested by Burnet police after a year of burglaries and break ins in Burnet area businesses. Officer Steve Moreno said the arrests cleaned out our files of burglaries and break ins.
A Hearne resident told the city council at its regular meeting that the northwest area lacks street and sewer improvements. He accused officials of favoritism in revenue sharing funds and urged councilmen to consider Hearne as a whole.
Rockdale school trustees approve a near record budget of 1,525,285 for 1976-77 citing carryover funds and a slight rise in property valuations. The district tax rate remains at one dollar per 100 valuation, unchanged from last year.
Caldwell adopts a building permit ordinance to comply with flood insurance rules. Individuals pay 2 dollars and businesses pay 5 dollars for obtaining permits from the city secretary before construction renovation or repairs.
Milam County awaits the September 1 opening of mourning dove season with prospects varying. Game Warden Dale Moore cautions that a norther or rain could push birds south, while birds migrating from northern states may brighten outlooks. The season runs Sept 1–Oct 14, then Jan 1–Jan 16, with hours noon to sunset and day-long southern segment.
Southwestern Bell plans more than 1.3 million dollars to upgrade Cameron telephone service as the city grows. Dennis Richter says the project will add lines, bury 590000 feet of cable, and remove about 1450 poles. Growth is forecast at 10 percent by 1977 and 18 percent by 1981, with work starting mid September and finishing late 1977.
Three Milam County health unit nurses Jo Laywell Marie Jackson and Martha Adams will join 20 to 30 nurses in Temple on September 3 to learn vaccine administration procedures for swine flu. Rep. Dan Kubiak outlines two Texas constitutional amendments on the November ballot both centered on water. Amendment One would authorize up to 400 million in Water Development bonds with two thirds legislative approval and allow proceeds to fund Mississippi River water projects. Amendment Two would authorize 100 million in bonds to aid local governments financing wastewater and disposal facilities while opposing bonded debt. An advisory by the Texas Legislative Council is available.

Secretary of State Mark White announced a statewide voter registration drive for the fall Presidential election. A pilot last spring added about 400 000 voters to Texas rolls. Registration forms are available through county tax assessors or by calling 1 800 292 9602 in White’s Austin office.
