First National Bank of Cameron Texas Opens Half Century

Fifty years after its 1889 founding, the First National Bank of Cameron Texas celebrated its 50th anniversary with a modest week of events. President Henry M. Hefley highlighted patrons and friends as key to the bank’s service, noting founder John M. Hefley organized the institution in Cameron with a $50 000 capital.

First National Bank Leaders Honored in Anniversary Review

From the August 22 1889 minutes officers were John M Hefley president C P Dodge cashier and T F Hardy assistant cashier. Directors included Hefley Arnold Reese Peoples McLane Hoxie Rain ey and Sellers. Hefley led the bank through early service and his death came December 20 1908. Henry M Hefley elected cashier January 12 1904 and the bank endured panics and depression, praising its strength and community service during fifty years of operation. Joe Cahill Dies in Cameron Hospital

Joe Cahill a 48 year old Burlington merchant died at Cameron hospital Wednesday evening after a prolonged illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at St Michael’s Catholic Church Burlington with Rev T F O Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow in Burlington. He is survived by a sister Sister Eduard Marie of Austin and two brothers Bart Cahill and Dan Cahill.

Mrs. Sam Hefley Gravely Ill in Houston

Mrs. Sam Hefley was rushed to a Houston hospital Monday afternoon for treatment and reported in grave condition with little hope of survival. The illness is cancer, with no expectation of recovery.

Jeff Hefley Declares War On Gambling in Burleson County

Jeff Hefley owner of the Central Texas Retail Credit Bureau in Bryan travelled to Cameron and announced that slot machines marble machines and other gambling forms have been driven out of Burleson county and will likely stay out. He recently wrote a caustic letter to Governor W Lee O Daniel challenging Burleson county conditions centered on Club Avalon near the Brazos River. Hefley did not release the letter but its contents prompted reports that Rangers were sent to Caldwell to pursue action.

Mattress Makers Must Obtain Permit or Face Fines

County health officer Dr. W. R. Newton said the State Health Department requires mattress manufacturers to secure a permit before production or face heavy fines. He noted Dr. A. S. Epperson and he should be contacted prior to any mattress being made.
