Martin and a friend began collecting aluminum beer cans mid July and have gathered over 1 000 cans. The effort earned 5 75 dollars and hints at possible IRS scrutiny next April. Buckholts Lions Club invites the public for an 8:30 p.m. Thursday talk by Freddie Wolters of Bryan District 2-S3 Lions International. Wolters, active since 1957, has held multiple leadership roles and now serves as district governor. He also works in banking and ranching and is a World War II veteran.
George Saver recreation supervision technology at TSTI was named general chairman of the 1973 Boy Scout Good Turn Day Drive for the Heart Of Texas Goodwill Industries. About 10 000 Scouts will collect wearable and repairable clothes and household items on November 4 to aid Goodwill’s rehabilitation program for disabled workers. Reconditioned goods are sold in eight Goodwill Thrift stores in Waco Temple Killeen Hillsboro and Har ker Heights.
The Central Texas Alcohol Safety Action Project reports 75 drivers from the Cameron Rockdale area were interviewed Saturday with six declines. About one in seven had been drinking but no BAC reached 10 percent or higher. Interviews averaged six and a half minutes. The project credits local law enforcement and media for cooperation.
The city council heard a report on urban renewal by A. W. McCullin UK executive director and authorized bid calling for several items of equipment. A committee was appointed to investigate alleged irregularities in the city police department, with survey findings highlighting unpaved dusty streets on the west side as the most pressing concern.
Cameron residents are urged to join the Friends of the Cameron Public Library as a membership drive continues through the week. An art exhibit runs at the library until September 27 and a book sale accompanies the drive.
The city of Cameron received a city citation in AAA's 34th Pedestrian Safety Inventory for 1972, among 274 awards to 2,087 U S cities. The recognition cites low deaths and injuries and strong programs across seven areas, with Cameron reporting no pedestrian deaths and five injuries in 1972.
