Sand Bed Replaced with Gravel at Santa Fe Station

At Cameron Commercial Club meeting officials of the Santa Fe ordered enough gravel shipped to Cameron to replace the sand bed at the rear of and abutting the Santa Fe passenger station, relieving a longtime eye sore. The two 2x6 timber planks suggestion for bridge repairs also drew approval from County Judge W. G. Gillis and two commissioners. Newton McDonald, ex Ben Arnold school head, becomes bookkeeper at Cameron's Citizens National Bank. S. W. Cheeves reports strong buys in St. Louis and Chicago amid war conditions.

Milam County D Troop D Soldiers Granted Honorable Discharge

Milam county boys in Troop D 3rd Cavalry receive honorable discharges after underage service. Captain Taylor notes they were discharged under orders from Brigade Headquarters for being under 18. Texas to issue regular discharges. federalization of regiments anticipated. Sergeant J C Griffin to procure cots and uniforms. The Texas Cavalry, two brigades of 4500 volunteers, represents many Texas families and is aligned with U S Army leadership.

Jones Prairie Forms Defense Council In Milam County

A Sunday meeting at the Little River church organized a Jones Prairie community council of defense with Dr. W. J. Fontaine as chairman and S. T. Barrett and P. H. McKinney Jr. as officers. County Judge W. G. Gillis and A. S. Hearrell spoke patriotically. Troop D and Milam county volunteers mobilize for service. Captain Walton D. Taylor and Lt. Jack Lewis lead the effort as fears grow of deployment to Europe.

Cameron public schools reopen Monday September 9 with strict first day attendance. Meeting at Little River Church Services Next Sunday

Announcement requests attendance at Little River Church in Jones Prairie for three services next Sunday August 25 conducted by E. G. Townsend and wife from Baylor College Belton. Widely known in Milam county, a large crowd is hoped for with morning, evening, and night services. Grace Moore arrives in Cameron to manage Cheeves Brother's Dry Goods millinery department after previous work in St Louis.

Cameron City Council Defers Light Rate Increase Action

Cameron council defers resuming the old light rate after a two week delay and votes 2 to 3 to postpone. Aldermen J C Joseph, J D Dobbins and Geo T Graves support deferral while Oxsheer M Smith and H M Hefley oppose. The meeting also grants $5 monthly raises to McFarland and Steve Lewis of the street department. A Mass Meeting to discuss school matters is announced for Friday night August 23 at 8 45 in the school auditorium.
