A Texas proclamation from Governor W P Hobby urges local boards and officers to publicize and organize September registration for extended draft ages. The Milam County notice directs voting-box registrars to recruit help and register all eligible residents, with home registration for the ill.

Cameron Commercial Club discusses road work and utilities

The Cameron Commercial Club met Friday with strong attendance and high interest. A committee reported on raising light rates and recommended publishing the report for the City Council. A separate group will assess telephone rate legality, and funds are available to repair Ad Hall Pike and county bridges using 2x12 runners.

Pay the President Day Timed to Boost War Bond Sales

August 27 declared Pay the President Day with President Wilson urging subscribers to buy August stamps to support the war. Postmasters and agents stock stamps. receipts credit pledges. Milam County sold $961,000,000 in stamps last week in Texas. County Chairman orders weekly sales reports and school trustees kept in government service through December 31. Teachers urged to lead in war effort with a $100 stamp purchase minimum. A quota and subscriber list for each district will be published.

County Council Forms Defense Group in Thorndale

County Judge W. G. Gillis and Attorney U. S. Hearrel organized the Thorndale area school district into a Community Council of Defense. Sam Clement and C. Saller from the city join the County Council and engage in war work.

Milam County Council of Defense met in Cameron to appoint committees from each district west of Little River. The panels will organize local Councils of Defense to aid war work and report progress at the August 22 meeting in Cameron.

Prof Henry A Clapp of the A and M College extension department gave a meat canning demonstration in Cameron using a roaster and roast beef. He delivered a talk on food conservation urging attendees to save meat by canning and many people attended the lecture.

Salem merchant visits Cameron to restart Herald

J. D. Nisbett of Salem visited Cameron on Tuesday to revive his newspaper subscription after a recent cancellation. He said restoring the paper was needed to keep peace at home.

Terrell for Comptroller in Texas Democrat Primary

The August 24 Democratic primary chooses a nominee for Comptroller of Public Accounts between H. B. Terrell of McLennan County and C. C. Mayfield of Erath County. Terrell, the current comptroller, received high praise for an efficient administration amid expanding duties and staff reductions.
