Story Book Land Arrives At Cameron Autumn Arts Show

Children will journey through Story Book Land at Cameron City Park on October 1. The event features a petting zoo with calves and a tame rabbit, sections themed Little Boy Blue and The House That Jack Built, face painting, and dream role play. A volunteers group led by Marjorie Riley plans contests such as hoola hoop and jump rope with prizes.

Milam County Faces $81 000 Shortfall Over Bookkeeping Error

Milam County officials cited a bookkeeping error after the January switch to a new system left the county balance $81 000 lower than previously reported. Judge O B Harden blamed un-reconciled bank statements and the auditor’s setup, with possible extra impacts from transfers between banks.

Cameron city council heard paving plans for Green Addition with work possible in about a month after Texas Securities Corp signs up residents. The firm representative said most of the 40 block area have signed up and will underwrite funds for those who have not.

Milam Farm Leaders Plot Labor Day Tractor Trailride

A four man Milam County committee plans a tractor trailride on Labor Day to dramatize the farm price crisis. About 60 farmers and leaders from Texas Farm Bureau Texas Farmers Union and local operations met at Cameron First Methodist Hall to map seven goals including educating the public boosting commodity prices and lobbying officials.

Cameron Man Killed In One Vehicle Crash Near Farm Road 1600

Thomas Rubio a 28 year old Cameron resident died at the scene when his bob tail truck hauling silage overturned on Farm Road 1600 about three miles south of Cameron. Justice of the Peace Jess Brock declared him dead. The truck owned by Elm Creek Dairy crashed trapping Rubio beneath it. DPS Trooper Jerry Benson investigated. Funeral services for Rubio were pending at Marek Burns Laywell Funeral Home at presstime. The incident marked the county's sixth traffic fatality of the year.

Krenek Elected Folk Fete President in Cameron

Pearlie Krenek of Cameron to head the 1978 Folk Fete with James Anderle as first vice president and Jeff Webster as second vice president. The board reported 1977 Folk Fete net income of 3 043.01 and a Folk Fete Inc balance of 4 293.31. Admissions reached 3 762, a festival high, as directors eyed permanent Fiesta Grounds facilities and planned monthly meetings through June 1978.

TRC official signals mining law impact and new projects

Roy Payne of the Texas Railroad Commission outlined expanded oversight under the new Surface Mining and Reclamation Act. He cited planned lignite strip mining near Milan by Shell Oil 1981–85, a 545 megawatt TP&L plant at Rockdale Works, and a joint Alcoa TP&L generator for an Alcoa facility in Palestine. He noted Alcoa received Texas’s first soil conservation award and first surface mining permit under the act.
