An electrical fire at Alcoa Rockdale Works disrupted pressing packing and pulling as crews fought the blaze from 7 a.m. to mid afternoon after a circuit fault in feeder cables near the mixing building roof. Fire brigade and volunteers extinguished after de energizing the circuit.
The Belton school board approved a 1975 76 budget of 3,472,805 at Monday’s session. The tax rate is 1.50 per 100 valuation with 1.20 for maintenance and operation and 0.30 for the interest and sinking fund. The district’s valuation is 51,784,960 under the 1974 re evaluation program.
Several hundred people attended a Ping Pong Shower in downtown Caldwell on Saturday. Sponsored by the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants Committee, the event promoted shopping Caldwell for back to school needs. Three dozen of the 300 balls dropped from a single engine plane granted prize rights to holders, with prizes donated by city merchants.
Audrie L. Fuller Jr., 27, of Hearne, a Black man, was sentenced to 15 years in the state penitentiary by Judge W. C. Wallace in Franklin District Court. He was arrested in Hearne on August 4 after a July 24 incident involving an 80-year-old Black woman.
A $100000 damage suit was filed in District Court in Gatesville by injured worker Floyd Truelove. He lost his right leg between knee and ankle when struck by a front end loader at Gatesville’s sewage disposal plant last June 23. The petition cites careless and negligent acts.
Lampasas city council votes to hire a rate consultant to review Lone Star Gas Co. rate increase request and recommend action at a future meeting. The consultant will cost about 240 dollars per day despite protests from Councilman B. E. Ohnmeiss who warned of wasting money.
Cameron area Chamber Education Committee will host an ice cream supper August 21 at 7 p.m. in City Park to honor Cameron school personnel. Yee High band concert and new staff introductions will occur, with extra invites to school employees and supporters. Coffee and donuts will be provided for teachers on August 18, and a gym renovation bid discussion is tabled for a later meeting.
Austin Texas Agriculture Commissioner John C White announced an extension of the Family Land Heritage Program deadline to August 31. Applications have arrived at about five daily as more people learn of the program now in its second year, honoring families who have farmed or ranched the same land for over a century.
Mrs. Perry Holder will serve as president of the Cameron Public Library board with Richard Crowe as vice president and Mrs Ed Magre as secretary treasurer. Other board members include L W Stroup Jr Maxie Morgan Rufus Floyd Mrs Carroll Green Mrs Willis Looney and Mary Buck. The board adopted the new year budget for city council approval. Stroup reported repaired roof leaks and installation of new door locks.
A schedule change for high school registration is described. Freshmen and new students with surnames A through M meet at 9 a.m. in the gym on Thursday August 21, while those with surnames N through Z meet at 1 p.m. in the gym. An orientation for freshmen and new students will occur at these times. Czech classes begin with a meeting on Tuesday August 19 at 7 p.m. in Ben Milam School.
The Cen-Tex Cotton Oil Mill in Thorndale was purchased by the Houston Bank for Cooperatives at a Milam County courthouse sale held last Monday. The bank, holder of mortgages, appointed a substitute trustee Tom Shipp and bought the mill assets after default. Cen-Tex President R D Reeves, elected earlier, said directors would take a wait and see approach. Reeves noted the mill lacks a manager. The mill reported nearly 3.8 million dollars in gross sales in the last fiscal year and was organized in 1943 by cooperative gins with 30 gins in membership by 1973.
At a Thursday meeting the county commissioners set juror pay at 10 dollars per day with a 5 dollar affidavit fee for those not serving. The wolf trapper’s salary rises to 25 dollars monthly with the county share. They urged immediate reports of wolf kills to trapper Clifford Morgan and discussed local elevator repairs, constable expense requests, county reports, and Freezout Road rerouting funded by Alcoa.
Thorndale hosts its annual Chili Cook-Off at the Firemen's Hall on Sunday September 7 with food booths arts and crafts. Entries cost 5 per cooker with at least five pounds of meat and utensils.
