The Board of Stewarts of the First Methodist Church named Mrs Dana Monroe Church secretary at last weeks meeting according to Dr. Gus Evans Jr. president. New office hours announced by Rev. E Jewel Strong will be 8 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Friday.
The Yoemen football squad at Yoe High School begins practice under coach Billy Bates with 43 players, aiming to reach 60. Key players include Bertie Shumate 212 pounds Ernest Bayer 196 pounds Eugene Schattle 198 pounds and Pat Dillon 120 pounds Jimmy Woodum 140 pounds. Bates plans an Iowa wing T formation with a roster of 17 backs 3 centers 6 guards 7 tackles and 8 ends.
Cameron Quarterback Club opens season with a 7 30 p m meeting at VHS Yo ng Bidg to view a Holiday Bowls film highlighting TCU Clemson Arkansas Georgia Tech and Texas Syracuse New Year games of 1960. New officers and coaches will be introduced as Bill Bates Wallace Johnson and Jack Lari are welcomed. Johnson replaces Bill Ray Dickey who left to join Alvin High. Current officers listed include Dr S H Richardson president Joe Humplik vice president James T Terry secretary and directors Charlie Burke W O Rinn Jim Edwards.
The Knights of Columbus announce their annual picnic for October 2 with Lincoln Mondick as general chairman. The event includes a sausage and barbecue dinner and a dance that evening.
The Cameron City Council called for a cost analysis of paving West Main Street from the Southern Pacific tracks to Orchard Street after residents urged improvements. Mayor Coleman Duncum said drainage upgrades between Crockett and the SP tracks could delay paving but costs will be calculated for the segment from the tracks to Orchard. The council also weighed sewer line work for North Karnes and a reply about Cameron Field jurisdiction for Little League and Babe Ruth ballparks. They transferred 2470 from contingencies to drainage and street funds and set a meeting to review the city budget ahead of a September public hearing.
The Cameron School Board set a public hearing for the 1960-61 Cameron School District budget at 7.30 p m tonight. They will open bids on gasoline and oil for school vehicles and discussed using GI Vocational Building equipment in Cameron schools. Supt. Knebel reported 10 typewriters will join Cameron staff, a typing course added at O J Thomas School, and James Sewell resigned. the amended budget for 1959-60 was adopted as Yee Field pressbox construction and bleacher repairs proceed.
The Newton Memorial Hospital Fund total reached $55,000 this week. Officials said final letting of bids was delayed by finances. Consideration was given to leasing part of the present facilities for about a year to provide income during the new hospital build. Officials are working with contractors to reduce costs to assure construction. The fund HQ was moved to the hospital and gratitude is extended to contributors.
Cameron ISD plans a busy start August 29 to September 1 with teachers meetings and conferences. Open house and PT A reception set for September 1 at VHS courts as 6 year olds register and new students bring birth certificates and immunization records.
Cameron School officials announce Arley Attaway as Ada Henderson principal and Max McClaren as Ben Milam principal while Wallace Johnson becomes Yoe High coach and math teacher. Attaway succeeds Leon Brady after health-related resignation. McClaren continues English duties at Yee High School.
About 40 Cameron residents attended the initial Civil Defense meeting Monday night at Yee High School Ag. Bidg. James Luckey led a three hour class on procedures and distributed handbooks. Plans were made for three more sessions to complete the course with Cornelius Titsworth, UHS instructor, attending a lecturer course to aid the group.
A W McGregor reports from Venezia Italy detailing a Jordan and Jerusalem tour. He visits the Good Samaritan Inn, River Jordan, Jericho, Dead Sea quarries, Qumran, biblical sites in Jerusalem, Hebron and Jacob's Well and notes climate shifts and site doubts while planning next on Israel Greece and Italy with Pope John XXIII audience.
Funeral services for Tom R. Crow age 75 who died of a heart attack at Pendleton were held from Marek Burns Funeral Home. Rev A C Lane of the Assembly of God church in Waco officiated. Burial followed at McDowell cemetery near Belton. Crow a retired farmer lived around Cameron most of his life. Survivors include two sons Howard Crow of Waco and Homer Crow of San Antonio, four daughters Mary Clark of Waco Lucy Donaldson of Waco Pearl Moseley of Pendleton and Birdie Clinard of Cameron. one brother Robert Crow of Dallas. one sister Maggie Poe of Kerens. 27 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons.
Funeral services for Herschell Longmire age 54 who died of a heart attack while hunting were conducted at the Marek Burns Funeral Home with Dr C H Morris of Camera First Christian church officiating. Burial followed at Oak Lawn cemetery Rockdale. Longmire a retired US Coast Guard chief gunners mate served 26 years and lived in Jones Prairie for seven years. Survivors include his wife Ethel Longmire of Cameron his mother Gertrude Longmire Houston one brother Pete Longmire Houston one sister Mrs William K Howard Dover NH two nephews and one niece. Pallbearers were Stanley Hughes Bert Nicholson John Davis Carl Black Bill Becker and Edson Fikes.
Marlin Scouts from Troop 53 at Presbyterain Church won the Boy Scout Swim Meet for the second consecutive year. Troop 52 from Knights of Columbus in Cameron placed second, Troop 51 from Methodist Church in Rosebud finished third, Troop 191 from Episcopal Church in Cameron placed fourth, Troop 90 from Methodist Church in Rockdale finished fifth, and Troop 191 from American Legion in Buckholts finished sixth.
Milam County schedules another shallow oil test to 1000 feet by Summers-Shannon Oil Co on the Ellison lease in Levi Taylor Survey north Milam. Another project by Martinets and Naivar to 3100 feet in Maria J Delgado Survey northwest of Rockdale follows earlier shallow efforts.
