The Cameron United Fund holds its annual budget meeting on Thursday August 13 at 2 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office. Agencies seeking UF funds must have an appointment or contact Bernay Dusek, local UF chairman.
Cameron elementary registration for new students in grades 1 through 5 is Monday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 4 p.m. at Ada Henderson School. Principal Arnett Zelisko urges newcomers to bring health and school records from their previous school to prevent delays on the first day.
Noon Lions Club met with Texas Parks and Wildlife and city officials to push renovation of Wilson Ledbetter Park. A $1000 pledge was given to Mayor Perrin, with matching funds to be sought from P W Department. plans include enlarging the lake, adding playgrounds and picnic areas, and a general cleanup.
The American Red Cross seeks about 6 million dollars for Celia victims with Texas efforts targeting 1 million. Milam County residents may donate via Milam Co Chapter Red Cross, Box 32 Cameron. Celia caused 161 mph winds, killing 31, with Cuba, Florida, and Texas fatalities and widespread damage in Corpus Christi and nearby towns.
White Shield Oil & Gas of Tulsa filed potential on its No. 1 D H Perry wildcat in the Milbur Field south of Rockdale, reporting 49 barrels daily from Navarro at 3 449 680 feet. Plans include deeper drilling on the Perry lease and two Keeesee Thomas tests across the Milam line in Burleson County seeking Navarro.
In Houston's Astrodome 44 000 fans watched the South beat the North 35 19 in the annual Texas High School Coaches Association all star football game. Cameron Yee’s Rosebud players Puente and Richardson starred. Puente’s jersey No 11 will be retired. Bassler and Frazier also stood out as Cameron fans cheered a five touchdown second quarter surge.
HUD deferred a request for 50 additional public housing units for Cameron due to funding limits. The Cameron Housing Authority reports 80 percent completion on the current 50 units and expects occupancy in the fall.
Cameron Little League Cardinals finished third at the State finals in Brownwood after a week of play that included losses to Temple and wins over Marfa Odessa and Palestine. Coaches Joe Lee Heitman Joe Mondrik and sponsors shared rooms with the 14 players as they toured Brownwood and honored sportsmanship.
A joint City Council and Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday August 11 at 6 p.m. in City Hall will discuss Cameron's Base Studies Report. Southwest Planners Albritton and Associates and the Governor's Office will attend. All interested persons are invited.
The Cameron School Board will meet Thursday August 13 to adopt the 1970 71 budget not August 10 as previously reported in Thursday's Herald. Supt D R Dodson said all interested persons are invited to attend at 8 p.m. Ben Milam School.
Two petitions seek consolidation of Milano Independent School District with Cameron ISD presented to Milam County Judge Harden. If approved, a ballot election will decide consolidation with a possible second vote on bonded indebtedness.
The Commissioners Court meets at 9 a.m. in the Courthouse on Thursday August 13. United Fund budget briefing is set for 2 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office. Evening Lions gathering is at Gelner's Smokehouse at 7 p.m.
