Democrats Certify Texas Nominees After Quiet Session

Texas Democratic leaders certified their nominees for governor and statewide offices after a subdued session. Gov. Allan Shivers led the ticket with 829,730 votes, followed by Case March at 195,997 for lieutenant governor runoffs. Other certified nominees include Price Daniel attorney general Robert W. Calvert supreme court Place 2 Bascom Giles land commissioner, William J. Murray Jr railroad commissioner, Jesse James state treasurer. Coach Smith Opens Fall Work Schedule at Yee High

Yee High School head coach Paul Smith announced a two a day fall schedule starting Tuesday August 15 for the Yeomen. Mornings focus on conditioning from 7 to 9 p.m. and evening work under lights at Yeoman Field from 7 to 9, plus skull practice 5:50 to 6:30 in the gym as the team readies for the coming gridiron battles.

Ballots Ready for Absentee Voting This Week

Walter Senkel Brings First 1950 Cotton Bale to Cameron

The first 1950 cotton bale arrived Thursday morning from the Walter Senkel farm near Jones Prairie. Weighing 430 pounds lint and 800 pounds seed, it was delivered to the Weems Gin at about 11 am. Cameron expected the usual good cash premium, with full details to follow tomorrow.

Death of Roy McAtee Near Pond Creek

Roy McAtee aged 30 was found dead in his car off highway 77 near Pond Creek early Sunday August 6. He was en route to Rosebud and likely died from a car crash into a ditch. He was a Milam County native born at Burlington and worked at Fort Hood. Funeral held at St Michael's Burlington with interment in Rosebud Cemetery.

City Minutes Reflect Rent Request For Mayor Office

City aldermen voted 4 to 1 to charge $30 per month for a mayoral office. The minutes will not show Mr. Green agreeing to pay the rent. He disputes the record and says no office will be equipped unless he pays. No action was taken to provide a private mayoral office.

A Borden Company rep reports local producers ready to sell in a proposed grade A market. Cameron lacks interest in a Cam eron plant, though the chamber plans a farmers meeting to spur growth. Cameron lies in the Houston milk shed with milk now sent to Bryan and Caldwell.

Parking Meters Bring City $142.92 In First Toll

City Secretary W H Stafford reports initial meter collections totaling 142.92 from Cameron's meters. The system has 125 meters with 250 slots, charging 1 penny for 12 minutes or 2 pennies for 24 minutes, up to 60 minutes. Weekly empties begin Thursday, predicting over $6,000 yearly if trends continue.

Peace Hopes Fade as Russia Widens Breach

Two Alarms Sounded in Downtown Fire

A two alarm fire in downtown damaged Killen Food Market at North Houston and East 1st with losses around $1000. Fire started in a rear motor of a freezing unit. water and smoke caused most damage. The Southwestern Bell exchange and J. M. McLean facilities suffered little damage as operators stayed at posts amid smoke. Earlier a grass fire near Chas C. Smith home prompted responders to return to duty, with Set Mann Arnold reporting the blaze.

Cameron Public Schools announce four new faculty hires

Superintendent W. T. Hanes said the fall term begins September 1 and lists four new teachers Imogene Whatley Nell Mayes Patsy Esslinger and Don Ross at Yee High and Ada Henderson Schools. Kathryn Robbins resigns and Coach Paul Smith serves as acting principal during Layfield's year away in Tokyo. E. E. Williford moves to the High School as Smith's assistant and athletics director. A new school bus will be operated this year.

Milam County Calls 60 Men for Pre Induction Exams

Milam County draft board announced sixty men were called for pre induction physicals with reporting dates August 10 and 17 for Cameron to Houston transport. A further call from Selective Service Headquarters may add about 100 more men this fall as induction is anticipated this autumn amid wartime uncertainty.

First Bale Premium Sponsored By The Cameron Herald

The Cameron Herald will sponsor the premium for the first bale of 1950 cotton. Subscriptions must arrive by 10 A M Thursday with no extension. If funds arrive late they will be returned or used for the 1951 premium. Publisher notes no civic group volunteered. Walter Senkel of Jones Prairie ginned last Thursday.

Cameron Girl From Cameron Chosen Miss Texas Runner-Up

Gwyn Wilson of Cameron placed second in the Miss Texas Contest at New Braunfels and became an alternate to Miss America. She represented Miss Brazos Valley and received a cup, gold wrist watch, and a year’s nylon hose supply. Miss Margaret Sommers of UT Austin won Miss Texas. Wilson may travel to Atlantic City if needed.
