City Council clashes with Mayor Green during a tense meeting over enforcement of traffic laws and a water bond defeat. L. Van Perkins accuses lack of cooperation and launches a tirade as the council outlines meter plans set to begin July 31, while Green disputes any set date. The council signs a lengthy ordinance amid firm opposition.
Cameron Lions Club directors met at the president Woo drow Lowe home on July 26 appointing committee chairs for the coming year. They organized the first part of September carnival on the Court House Lawn with F. E. Jackson Herbert Nance and Dr. George Bowman named as carnival directors.
City of Cameron plans auto parking meters starting Monday July 31 but delays enforcement for two weeks. Aldermen signal timid approach to penalties while Educational cards are issued. Marshall Terry will head meter enforcement during the grace period and violators will be notified of corrections after activation.
The Daily Midget reports a Cameron bachelor Ray Edward Gray of the Gas Equipment Co found a bride through an in paper classified ad. The couple will marry in a week after Gray received thousands of inquiries and hundreds of interviews despite a 92 cent ad cost.
The Agricultural Department set cotton support at 29.45 cents a pound for 15 16 middling, near 1949 levels and below current market. Rice price supports at 2.05 per bushel, with rice selling around 2.00 now. The report notes regional price variations from 28.68 to 30.28 cents and a rise in the market since July 15. Milam County farmers expect extra income as the market has advanced about six cents per pound.
Mrs. Brock, head of Draft Board No. 92 in the Lippman Building, will attend a clerk conference in Dallas Thursday through Saturday. The office will close Thursday and Friday this week and reopen Monday, August 7. Residents with classification questions should report to the Draft Board on Thursday, August 3.
Milam County Draft Board No 92 schedules 18 men for pre induction physicals. Notices will be mailed soon. Those called will depart Cameron August 17 to Houston for examinations on August 18 at 805 Preston Avenue. A prior 12 men from last month depart August 10 for exams on August 11 at the same site.
The Cameron Chamber of Commerce hosts the final talent show Friday night August 4 at 8 p m on the Court House lawn. First prize is 35 and second prize 25 for top acts from past shows. Contestants include Willie Parcus Maysfield Patricia Zavrel Buckholts Don Bullock Milano Fred Collins Burlington and Charles Herbst Gause. Yee High School Band provides music. Bill McIntosh is emcee.
Falls County's first bale of cotton was delivered in Rosebud by Marion Mitchell a Clarkson area farmer. The 510 pound bale ginned at F C Schmidt gin was bought by T R Depew for 350 30 dollars about 70 cents per pound. Seed weighed 900 pounds sold at 30 dollars per ton. The Chamber of Commerce added 100 dollars as a premium to raise the grand total.
Battery C 649th Antiaircraft Battalion with the 49th Armored Division begins its second week of summer camp at North Fort Hood. Reveille at 4:45 A.M. starts daily drill on rifle and 40 mm gun ranges with high hit rates. Soldiers enjoyed a weekend home leave, except for a few on KP or guard duty, as an overnight bivouac in the field looms as the highlight before pay and pack up.
In Cameron a trial of parking meters draws discussion in the Friendly City. A stray dog, remarking on the new meters, quips you’ve got to pay now, illustrating local curiosity and humor about the change.
Becky and Catti lou Slocomb return to San Antonio after a two month stay with Mrs. B. Slocomb in the city.
Milam County PMA official Alva E. Sanders says marketing cards are being prepared and will be mailed soon with IMPORTANT stamped envelopes. Overplanting incurs 15.5 cents per pound penalty plus disqualification from 1950 ACP payments. prior practice approvals require repayment for government materials. Remeasurement fees apply. overplanted producers have 15 days to destroy excess cotton and should contact the County PMA Office for details.
Emil Piske 50 a former Cameron resident died in Texas City Monday July 31 1950. The body arrived in Cameron Tuesday and the funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 00 P M at Green's Chapel with burial in Vogelsang Cemetery. Survivors include wife of Texas City son Lester Piske and daughter Mrs A L Bucklew both of Texas City two sisters Zelma Piske Austin and Mrs Emma Yager San Antonio and three brothers Henry Piske Little River Hugo Piske Yorktown and Herman Piske Yorktown.
Milam County egg producers gain about three dollars per case thanks to the storage cooler system at Ideal Hatchery. Leo Fuchs reports a shipment of 110 cases to Dallas yielded 37.9 cents per dozen, over ten cents above market price, with weekly shipments and broader farmer participation anticipated to sustain egg income in the county.
Central Texas fields remain plagued by boll weevils per Blackland Experiment Station weekly report. County agent J D Moore says infestations are heavy but could ease with hot dry weather. 260 fields were inspected with average infestation noted.
Complete unofficial tabulation shows J B White receiving 5985 votes to lead Milam County. Walter White 5979, L H Hillyer 5976, Carl Black 56971 and Grady Allen 5971各 tied for fourth in county races.
Cameron city records show July building permits totaling 11100 led by residence construction. City secretary W H Stafford notes a housing shortage persists despite five years of home building, with 17 families unable to be housed last month for an oil firm.
The Cameron Water Department moved to City Hall on Monday July 31 and will begin operations in the Chamber of Commerce rooms. Water bills will be issued from the City starting Tuesday morning, and customers are asked to present and pay bills at the new location. Manager L W Smith urged cooperation during the move.
Mrs. Frank Vater of Shreveport Louisiana is dead after a car wreck two miles east of Mayfield near Highway 190 at 10 30 p m. Her 3 year old daughter Nancy Farline was seriously injured along with sister in law Rosaliene Vater. The victims were returning from a visit with her husband Corp Frank Vater of Fort Hood.
Milam County Draft Board announces a new 4-A classification for veterans. It covers those with WWII service honoring active duty for specified periods between 1940 and 1949 and sole surviving sons of families with service casualties or deaths in action.
The Farmers Home Administration announces the annual FHA picnic for 28 current borrower families and 6 former borrowers will be held Friday night August 4 at Cameron city park. Roy Wright says the event, held since 1940, fosters acquaintance among families. activities include children's games bingo prizes and an old time basket lunch.
Brigadier General Paul L. Wakefield, state director of Selective Service, warned that many men classified 1-A in Texas have not reported marriages and other changes. Delays by local boards in reissuing examination orders risk failing to meet the September quota of 2,512.
