Milam Areans Reports Rockdale Permits Reach Milestone

Milam Areans issued July building permits totaling 128 450 dollars in Rockdale, lifting the seven month 1977 total to 1 913 002 dollars and surpassing the 1973 annual record of 1 859 675 dollars. With five months left, 1977 heads toward Rockdale’s first two million dollar year, one of only three million dollar years in city history alongside 1954 and 1967.

Catfish Grows Inside Car Trunk In Lake LBJ Find

A 25 pound catfish was pulled from a lake side car trunk at Lake LBJ near Wirtz Dam last Saturday afternoon. Officers believe the fish lived in the car for a long period and grew to its massive size.

Lott Clinic Opens in Former Library Building

Lott citizens dedicated a new clinic Sunday with open house in the former library. Rose bud doctors will see patients five days a week. The clinic uses revenue sharing funds and sales tax rebates. A second Milam County oil gusher blew in Thursday afternoon on a 55 acre Peeples tract near Milano. Drilled by B&B Drilling Co and W C Pemberton & Associates in the Austin Chalk, rumors say the well could produce about 1000 barrels per day with substantial gas.

Alert Woman Helps Capture Burglary Suspects in Buckholts

A Buckholts area woman, Mrs. Shirley Hill, saw two suspects leaving her home with sewing machines and noted their car license number. Authorities used the information to arrest Shelia White and Ernest Riley for burglary of a habitation. White posted bond and Riley was jailed on a $10,000 bond.

New General Surgeon Joins St. Edward Staff

Dr. Bill Smith, formerly of Houston, joins St. Edward Hospital as general surgeon. A Navy flight surgeon commander for 12 years, he now works at Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale and builds a home there. A Freeport native, Baylor Medical School graduate 1960, he holds a Texas zoology BA and is married with four children.

Grassfires rise in Central Texas amid hot dry spell

Fire warnings grow as dry weather continues in Central Texas. Cameron volunteers fought a grassfire near Hwy 77 and FM 485 after reports of discarded cigarettes and trash burning, identified as major fire risks in tinder dry countryside.
