SCS advocates large adequate dams to conserve water

The Central Texas Soil Conservation District notes that small ponds fail to supply livestock water year round as drought lowers rainfall. They point to larger ponds 2000 cubic yards or more, over 8 feet deep, with soils in good condition that absorb and retain moisture. Poor soil structure and long row cropping without cover crops hinder water infiltration and storage.

Soil farming methods for drought resilience

Deep rooted legumes or grasses improve soil conditioning when left for a full growing season. Old crop residue helps catch and store water for future use. Contour cultivation slows water run-off and promotes infiltration. Many conservation practices aid farmers in offsetting drought damage.
