Library Opens Tuesday Evenings in Cameron

Cameron Library will be open Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 with Mrs Wells and Miss Bynum in charge. Morning hours are 10 to 11:30. Rev. McKeown urges more volunteers for additional evenings and asks interested people to contact him.

Alcoa and union reach agreement averting nationwide strike

Union officials and Alcoa announced a Friday night settlement avoiding a strike at about 13 plants nationwide. Details were not released from Pittsburgh. Mediation in Washington followed failed talks to end wage and benefits disputes with the union seeking longer vacations higher insurance pensions and eight cent raises.

County Clerk Homer Nabours is reported to be improving at King Daughters Hospital in Temple after a heart attack. He has been a patient for two weeks and shows considerable progress, with friends in the county glad to hear of his improvement.

Thirty Six 4 H Clubbers Return From Milam County Camp

A group of 36 people including 14 4 H girls 11 4 H boys 7 adult leaders and parents visited Belton Park July 27 28 for the Milam County 4 H Camp. Activities included a craft workshop bracelet making assembly electing a camp chairman secretary and song leader and supervised swimming. Clinton Harbers To Speak At Legume Program

Clinton Harbers a Fayette County G I farmer who raised cotton yield from 116 to 738 pounds per acre in seven years will be guest speaker at the Milam County Legume Program in Cameron on August 19. He will show pictures and note a net 211 dollars per acre on cotton in 1953. The program is sponsored by the Milam County Farm Bureau with local business, seed dealers, and agricultural workers supporting soil improvement.

Ned Green 84 Dies After Illness at McCloskey Services

Ned Green 84 died Friday after a weeklong illness at McCloskey Hospital. Born in Hillsboro he lived most of his life in Milam County. He is survived by his widow four sons three daughters a brother and four sisters. Funeral at Greens Funeral Home Chapel with graveside rites by Edwin Hardy Post No 9 at Oak Hill cemetery.

City Council approves compromise rate hike for Southwestern Bell

At Tuesday night meeting the council granted a rate increase for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Four aldermen supported the compromise while Robert Weems did not vote. New rates apply to business lines and residences and take effect with October billing.

National Guard Departs For Fort Bliss With Promotions

The Battery C 649th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion of the National Guard announced ten promotions before departing for a two week summer camp at Fort Bliss near El Paso Texas. Eight promoted to Corporal included Pfe Charles L Eanes Albert J Michalka Joseph L Mondrick James P Reichert Claudie D Sanders Layton D Scott Marvin R Weide and Otto G Zotz Jr. Also promoted to Private First Class were Pvt John J Dillon and Joe R Jedlicka. One new enlistment Alfred B Rydell was sworn in during drill.

Pro Shivers Forces Win At Convention Here Saturday

Pro Shivers supporters secured delegates at the Milam County district convention held in the county courthouse. The meeting, led by permanent chairman EF A Perrin, debated whether to count votes from both parties or only Democratic ballots for Shivers in the 1952 election. The convention favored counting the two party totals, despite differing state and county stances.
