Roger Gilliland Jr., 19, enlisted in November 1942 reporting to Great Lakes. He later served in the Merchant Marine, faced a 12 hour bombing in the Mediterranean, and took part in Tunis and Bizerte landings and Atlantic U-Boat war convoy routes. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Gilliland Sr. of Tracy.

Serious Injuries From Caldwell Car Wreck Monday
Clayton Devers suffered a skull fracture and concussion while Earnest Walker sustained a badly injured shoulder and facial lacerations in a car crash about 10 am near Caldwell. Both men were taken to Cameron Hospital. Walker was leaving for Houston to join his son, and Devers was en route for work in Houston. They were brought to Cameron by Joe Polansky.

Joe Richter Leaves Cameron Police After 20 Years
Joe Richter resigns after two decades on the Cameron police force where he served as deputy marshal, night officer, and Fire Marshal. A World War I veteran and 25 year American Legion member, he departs to devote full time to the Richter Transfer Company. He began service in 1923 in Santa Fe town and also spent 11 months in France with the 338th Remount Squadron, 90th Division.

Duncum Opens Repair Shop In Local Building
M C Duncum, formerly of Cameron, re opens his repair shop in the north half of the Foster Produce building. He and his family have been residing in Alvin and will specialize in Dodge and Plymouth repairs and service while offering general repair work. The new shop aims to relieve local mechanic shortages.

Fights The Japs Seaman James From Milano Serves In Navy
Fred Austin James, Seaman First Class in the United States Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. James of Milano, enlisted June 11, 1940, before the Selective Service Act. He left Houston for San Diego then joined USS Boise, now serving in the Pacific. He reports seeing interesting places and has two brothers in the Army at Fort Sam Houston.

July rainfall total reached 4.02 inches with 3.62 inches on July 29. Temperatures surpassed 100 degrees for nine days, nine days with six consecutive, from July 21 to 26. The peak reading occurred on July 24, while the lowest temperature dipped below 70 once on August 1.

Staff Sergeant Fussell Reaches North Africa in WWII
Robin Fussell, inducted into the army on September 24, 1941, trained at Fort Sill and Fort Dix, served in Ireland and Madamore where he became a Staff Sergeant. Harlem Race Riots Draw Troops To New York
At noon Monday troops were rushed to Harlem to quell violence labeled by officials as not a race riot. Up to noon six people were killed and 185 wounded in the black belt as authorities said the situation was stabilizing but casualties were mounting.
