Contract Awarded For Reconstruction On US 79 Milam County

The State Highway Commission announced a 4.2 mile reconstruction contract on US 79 in Milam County to Downing Brothers Inc of Waco. The project between Rock Creek and Thorndale includes a new Salty Creek bridge, grade line, and a 44 foot wide surfaced roadway. Work is expected to take 225 days under resident engineer Carol D Zeigler of Hearne.

Homer Stevens 69 Dies in Hearne Gause Resident

Homer Edney Stevens 69 of Gause died Sunday in a Hearne hospital after sudden illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Gause Baptist Church with Rev. M. Smith officiating. Burial followed in Gause Cemetery. Surviving are his wife Grace, three sons Michael J. Stevens, Joe L. Stevens, Homer E. Stevens Jr., a daughter Zola Kornegay, four brothers, and seven grandchildren.

Eugene Killed In Car Truck Crash Near Athens

funeral services pending for Robert E. Eugene of Cameron who died in a truck car collision on Texas 19 near Athens early Monday. The Dorsey Funeral Home noted Eugene, a father of six and driver for D. F. Collins hauling contractors, was in a Ranchero driven by Fred B. Eastland when a stalled truck trailer rolled downhill and struck the vehicle. He died at the scene. three others were treated and released.

Constable Thweatt Dies At Maysfield

Former merchant Gifford Thomas Thweatt died at his Maysfield home at age 64. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Marek Burns Funeral Home with two officiants. Burial follows at Pebble Grove Cemetery. Survived by wife Loreine Thweatt, two sons Thomas and Donald, brother Vaughn, two sisters, and four grandchildren.

Milam Oil Drilling Advances See Two New Wildcats

Milam County crews push two new wildcat wells in Milbur North Milbur Field and northeast of Buckholts as Edwards Lime and Wilcox sands test. Operators include Houston Petroleum Co for No 1 Garland A. Smith and Bryan’s Frank Kre Jr. for a 2,900 ft Edwards lime test. Bethan Drilling Co. works nearby with a Navarro depth of 856 ft on a Cameron area site.

Yee High School Gets New Windows As Renovations Continue

Workmen install aluminum windows at Yee High School easing a three year program to replace wooden frames opened in 1921. Exterior brick pointing and brick sealing proceed while a new band hall foundation starts freeing space for classrooms. August registrations announced for Yee and Ben Milam schools.

Cameron City Council Feeds Slough bid for paving contract

The Cameron City Council approved signing a contract with Slough Construction Co of Temple for the 100 block paving program and budgeted 500 for downtown Christmas decorations. The minutes showed Slough as the low bidder at 204651.12 versus Downing Construction’s 203679.51.

City OKs Tax Report Shows 1967 Increases

City Council approves a half inch Equalization Board report detailing 1967 tax changes. Real estate values rose by 289 361 with 914 properties up 251 down and nine removed from rolls. Personal property values gained 378 244 led by $17 550 removal in renditions.

Yee High Football Ticket Sale Opens for Reserved Sections

Season reserve football tickets for Sections B and C go on sale Monday for last year’s holders in the Yee High School principal's office. Holders have until August 18 to reserve, then remaining seats are sold first come, first served on August 21. Office hours are 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 4:00, Monday through Friday.

Donors Urged For Cameron Bloodmobile Drive

North Milam County residents are urged to donate a pint of blood at the Central Texas Blood Bank Bloodmobile staged at the Methodist Fellowship Hall Friday 1 to 7 p.m. The drive aims to meet a 71 pint Cameron quota with about 9 donors per eligible donation and to cover a 8 pint shortfall from the previous visit.

Five Cattle Killed in FM 2095 Truck Accident

A Bryan owned grain truck struck a cattle herd on FM 2095 at Hanover around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Five cattle died and one was crippled. the cattle were owned by Ruben Wise. Deputy Mortimer said the truck grill and fog lights were damaged, while the driver escaped injury. Sheriff Carl Black corroborated the ownership and incident details.

San Gabriel Dam funds approved for planning and land buy

The House appropriated 1.532 million for Laneport and North Gabriel dam planning and land acquisition as part of a 4.62 billion public works bill. Army Corps of Engineers plans two major dams for flood control and water conservation, with the Brazos River Authority covering reservoir construction costs. BRA director Oxsheer Smith highlighted benefits to Cameron and local farmers. 786,400 funds target land purchase, 655,000 for final planning, 91,000 for admin costs.
