Sam the dog returns to Sacred Heart in Elgin after church search

A Sunday feature recounts Sam the dog rejoining Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elgin. The dog wandered to Cameron last fall during a football game, helped by Father Everett Trebroske’s ad in The Cameron Herald, and was found to have converted to Catholic devotion, attending Mass and church events with the Davises’ approval.

Shooting incident leads to weapon charge in local court

Jessie Clinton of 905 S Nolan faces carrying a prohibited weapon and Damon Corona of 808 S Burleson faces simple assault charges after a gun incident at the Corona residence. Clinton treated for pellet wounds. both men jailed. Corona fined $32.50 in JP court.

Shell Oil officials plan Milam lignite talks in Cameron

Shell Oil Co officials from Houston will meet county and city leaders Monday and with the public Tuesday to present information on their Milam County lignite mining venture. They will meet the county commissioners at 1:30 p.m. and the Cameron City Council at 3 p.m. Monday, while the public is invited to a 9:30 a.m. presentation Tuesday at the Methodist Fellowship Hall in Cameron.

State Museum Expert Approves Old Jail Plan

Texas Historical Commission consultant tells Cameron County officials the old Milam County Jail can house a county museum. She outlines steps to organize, fund restoration, draft charter, and attract visitors with rotating displays. Officials plan to open in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial.

County considers ending tax discount for early payments

County commissioners plan to halt the discount on early tax payments at the May meeting due to rising costs. The tax office billing machine will be adjusted for new rates. Judge Harden seeks AG opinion on the $3,000 homestead exemption for residents 65 and over. If one spouse is 65 the exemption may stand. A report on disability and homestead exemptions is being prepared. Plans for a jail storage and laundry area were approved, and museum consultants joined the group to discuss a proposed county museum.

Seminar on shoplifting and bad checks draws 40 plus attendees

Over 40 business people attended a one night seminar on shoplifting and bad checks at the community center. Sponsored by the Cameron Police Department, the program was presented by DPS Officer Floyd Tippit, Robertson County special investigator Cecil Wingo, and Milam County Atty. Charles Smith. Texas Highway Patrol investigated 20 Milam County accidents in March with seven injuries and no deaths, bringing total for the year to 61 accidents and two deaths.
