Washington April 16 The House Military Affairs Committee split 10 to 8 on a test vote opposing immediate conscription as it weighs the Army bill. A split measure favoring volunteer first and draft only if needed is favored by many, as members consider substitutes and progress on the bill.
The piece notes measles in homes of Prof. C Mayfield W Cox and Frank Wingo, relapse illness of J T Gregory’s children, and Lee fever illness. Clark school under Prof Mae and Mrs J A McKinney has four weeks left. Clark n Debating Society met for a talk on should Military Training be taught in public schools with a negative win. Mrs Black’s house and goods burned near Jonesboro Thursday night. Geo Roper’s new gin at Rosebud, managed by Henry Henderson, and Electric Light Plant modernizing. Walter Huffined supervising. The San Jacinto Day celebration at San Gabriel on April 21 features a full day of wholesome patriotic entertainment. Hon. E A Camp will give a discourse on Present Day Americanism as part of the program. Polk C Webb extends the invitation.
Mr. W. M. Dodson of Post Texas spent the weekend with his sister Mrs. M. Hitt whom he had not seen for seventeen years.
Miss Cora Dockery hosted a Friday night party for local youths while Miss Frances Huebner entertained with a Saturday gathering featuring a Victrola. Austin visits by Mr. Joe Hample Frank Adolph Hauel and others noted. several trips to Marlow Buckholts and San Antonio for family illnesses and social visits.
Glarenge Ousley warns that wartime food shortages threaten national welfare and urges farmers to plant staples such as peanuts kaffir corn milo maize sorghum June corn Sudan grass and peas through April to June. He cites rising prices and a prolonged war outlook and calls for substantial home food production.

The past week saw registrations by O. L. Kidd and J. W. Hyde in Cameron with Ford vehicles. Ben McCellan registered a Ford in Minerva while R. P. Dickerson in Rockdale and J. B. West in Buckholts also registered Ford cars. Other Ford registrants include G. N. Broadway Thorndale J. T. Young Rockdale and Jim King Cameron. Julian Janicek Buckholts R. G. Stidham Jones Prairie Dan Peel Port Sullivan registered Ford, with A. F. Marak Burlington and Geo. T. Graves Cameron registering Studebaker and Ford respectively.

Mr and Mrs Otto Miller and their children visited in the city Sunday staying with their brother Mr Jas Neinast and family. They arrived in their touring car.
Real estate records show L Hillyer transferring Lot 1 in Block 7 of the William Mitchell grant to D B Gray for 1500 dollars. Mauldin et al. added to Jake Schneebell on 40 acres in the H Martin grant for 100 dollars.

The resignation of county clerk Jeff T Kemp was tendered last week to the commissioners.
Washington news: President Wilson issues a proclamation warning all persons in the United States that treasonous acts or aiding treasoners will be vigorously prosecuted. Aliens and residents owe allegiance, with penalties for misprision of treason and knowledge of treasonable plots.

Mrs C W Straus of Ben Arnold entertained the 42 club and guests at Mrs W A Hill's home in Cedar Hill. Pink white and red decor brightened the reception rooms. A man with a line of spectacles on display and a sharp spiel was picked up between here and Ben Arnold and transported to Cameron for future reference, according to the Burlington Tribune.
Missioners court did not accept the nomination. Mr. Kemp was offered the position of county auditor but will serve out his elective term. As yet no one has been appointed county auditor, but several applicants are awaiting consideration.
The grand jury opened Monday with J B Cavitt serving as foreman and is expected to remain in session throughout the week.
Louis Mackey an industrious colored boy employed at Wilkerson garage was shot in the head while seated in an automobile in front of Pace-Marshall Drug Co and died almost instantly Tuesday night police reported the killing occurred about 11 o clock Monday night in the city.
Mr R R Tyson of Branchville visits Cameron and declares himself a candidate for county sheriff. He says he will seek public support at the proper time.
