Bond issue to be ordered for road at Commercial Club meeting

At the April 12 1918 Cameron Commercial Club meeting directors discussed a road bond issue and praised Milam County Cameron and the club for backing the project. The Germania Sign was removed and a four acre hall lot was offered for sale. A general club meeting is set for Friday April 26 at 8 p.m. with members urged to attend.

Jim English Visits City On Ten Day Furlough

Fort Sam Houston soldier Jim English is in the city on a ten day furlough. He tells a Herald representative he reads the paper, even the ads, and looks healthful though slimmer than before. He formerly served as a rural route mail carrier on route No. 3 and has many friends in and out of the city glad to see him.

First Meeting of City Council Revises Officials and Committees

The newly installed City Council held its first session Tuesday appointing T. C. Stafford as Secretary and Treasurer with a $10,000 bond. A deputy city marshal was named, and a board of equalization plus school trustees were formed. Committees on Streets, Taxation, Finance, Police, Fire and Water, Petitions, Printing, and Ordinances were established.

Caldwell Family Arrives in Cameron to Start New Home

Mr and Mrs Harvey E Caldwell and daughter Harvie Jean from Ardmore Oklahoma arrived Tuesday to settle in Cameron. Caldwell will be employed as a clerk for the Santa Fe Ry in this city, after years of satisfactory service with the company. The Herald joins Cameron citizens in welcoming them.

Mrs. C P McGregor Takes Son Harleigh to Georgetown Contest

Mrs. C P McGregor and her son Harleigh traveled to Georgetown after Harleigh, a Junior Declamer from the city school, was sent to a contest in that city held late in the week.

Rockdale Exceeds Its Liberty Loan Quota

Tom Wooten of Cameron reports Rockdale businessmen formed a 15 member executive committee to study the Third Liberty Loan, used tax rolls to set minimums for all Americans Bohemians and Germans in and around town, and presented the amount for each person. The town easily met and surpassed its quota.

Milam County Wins Debate On Woman Suffrage

Milam County team led by Smith Summerlin and Moulton Cobb defeated Elgin high school debaters in Cameron last Friday night. Opponents included Alton Davis and Bailey Matthewson. judges Thos. W. Adams Dr. W. W. Greer and Daniel Watson. The 2 to 1 ballot verdict favored the Milam affirmative.

Eldred Acree Heads Home After Training on Mare Island

Eldred Acree, trained as a member of the Electrical Engineering Corps on Mare Island near San Francisco, passed Cameron Sunday on the Santa Fe en route to Philadelphia via New Orleans. He is the son of Mrs. Sharlee Acree, active in Red Cross work and reporter for the local ARC chapter.

Famous aviator to speak in Cameron

Paul D. Oakes of the 2nd Aero Squadron Kelly Field Texas will speak in Cameron for the Third Liberty Loan. A former Lafayette Squadron ace with three German defeats he fought at Lippincourt Hall Verdun and Soissons. He will speak April 29 at 8 PM at City Park.

Family Service Flag Honors Two Epperson Sons

The Bay window of Dr. and Mrs. Epperson bears a service flag with two stars. Their eldest Roy has been in service for months, and their younger Thad, 18, has recently joined the U.S. Navy for duty.

The Young Women's Business League of Cameron met with full attendance and two new members Miss Willyne Hide and Nell Caldwell. Mrs Poulson a Maccabee representative spoke on the league's motive. Dues were paid plus a $4.90 donation from Spiller and Meyers millinery and 50 cents from Mrs Poulson. Members pledged $1 for Liberty Bonds and Thrift Stamp paper was discussed. Meeting adjourned to May 1.

Car Ditches Near Tracy After Duncan School Event

Friday night a vehicle returning from Duncan stalled by bad lights veered into a deep ditch near Tracy. Occupants County Clerk Jeff T Kemp W G Gillis W C Saunders and Miss Nora Duncum teacher at Duncan school were shaken but not seriously hurt. They had attended a school play for Red Cross and Liberty Bond fundraising.

Mrs Epperson and son visit Caldwell relatives

Mrs A S Epperson and her son Roy, home on furlough, spent Sunday in Caldwell visiting relatives. Roy is praised for progress in his chosen service and is expected to lead the Aviation department on his early return, though he now suffers a minor foot injury needing a cane to get around.
