A two week Baptist revival will begin here on April 25 led by M T Andrews formerly of Temple now of Texercana. Andrews is well known in Cameron and a wide Texas area and is expected to attract many. Pastor E S Hutcherson recently returned from Rosebud where he assisted in a two week revival reporting 22 church additions, 20 by baptism.
A 46 year old enslaved man named Andrew Metrew, dead fifteen years, was displayed as a mummy at Marlin carnival grounds with ten cent admission. Undertakers from Falls County reportedly embalmed him with a fluid that astonished onlookers, drawing many visitors to the exhibit.
A large crowd is expected for a court of honor at Esley Lake at 7 30 p m Thursday. Judge Gillis will conduct with A J Lawrence of Waco as interporter. All boys parents and the public are invited. Donkey Bob Cats Bob Whites and Roosters plan to attend Cameron Boy Scouts to perform.
County Commissioner R A Hair says estimates are being made to hard surface the Rockdale to Tracy road through the San Gabriel river bottom. Inverted penetration gravel surfacing is favored to prevent washing away. Work to spread gravel on the river end and a Kraatz hill to Murray cemetery stretch will begin soon. A grading project from Brushy Bridge to the Thompson tract is reported complete but right of way must be secured before starting. A new jury of view will be appointed this week.
Milam County North Zone meeting at Cameron Baptist church on first Sunday in March 1928 draws four B Y U units to about double their total since creation less than a year earlier. Rev Odell Jameson leads as zone president with support from Mr Jr P Black and others. next gathering is planned at Branchville Baptist church on the afternoon of the first Sunday in May.
By Wednesday noon a large number had registered for trials tied to White Mountain stone lined refrigerators displayed by Green’s. The event references an ice-melt timing contest with prizes for those guessing closest to the melt time observed at 2 19 a m on April 6 in the box witnessed by Wm Cobb Delphia Scott and J B White.
Manager Shipp of the Peter Company promotes Swat the Rooster Day on Saturday April 2 as a second annual event. The first year drew over 600 roosters. an advertisement outlines the swatting process and price per pound for roosters.
The Milam Mutual Aid Association office has relocated from the Fahrendorf building to the former Keith Electric Company building. Owner Mr. Estelle, in Belton for health reasons, has been there several weeks.
Congressman Tom Connally of Marlin will launch his United States Senate campaign in Belton on Tuesday April 17. He will be introduced by T. S. Henderson of Cameron as Belton plans elaborate civic events and radio broadcast facilities. A crowd of 5000 to 10000 is expected with Cameron supporters traveling to the meeting where his campaign formally begins. His popularity among voters and local politicians’ interest in his bid are noted.
Bea trice Alderson of Bonham Texas wins $100 as the Texas state prize in the National Lumber Slogan Contest. The article lists other capital prizes and winners from across the United States and abroad amid wide participation and a brochure titled The Story of Wood.
Anna Lee Kornegay aged five months daughter of Mr and Mrs A Kornegay of Milano died at one o clock a m Tuesday April 10 of pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the grave Tuesday afternoon at 0 50 o clock p m Rev P T Ramsey conducting the service. Interment was in Milano cemetery. Green Bros of Cameron directed the funeral.
The Milam County Hardware Company announces the first shipment of Detroit Jewel gas stoves. Mr Davis states the firm secured a premier line for Cameron residents and invites the public to attend the display and inspect the merchandise.
The business informs customers it will close every Saturday at noon for weekly downtime until further notice. This schedule applies to all operations and staff during the closure period.
Old Time Music Lovers enjoyed a lively program at Yee High School supervised by the Thompson Brothers of Rogers. Proceeds benefited the library fund. Cameron residents hope the entertaining troupe returns for more performances.
Mr and Mrs Eber Flinn hosted the Mr and Mrs Bridge Club and friends on Tuesday night. Six bridge games produced high and low prize winners Mr and Mrs C W Bradbury and Mr and Mrs Dan Collins. A banana cake with whipped cream and hot chocolate was served. guests included Mr and Mrs Bradbury, Mr and Mrs Stanton Wossett, and Mr and Mrs Collins.
Funeral services for Mira F. A. Reineke, 38, who died Friday April 6 1928 at the family residence near Buckholts, were held at St. Monica's church. She leaves husband F. A. Reineke five children a sister two brothers and her mother. Green Brothers of Cameron conducted the funeral with pallbearers named.
Jack Horner visited his boyhood haunts with classmate Giles Arriett. Now living in Marshall as a traveling salesman, Horner recalled school days and times in Cameron. He served in the air service during World War I and plans more Cameron visits from his Dallas base as his territory expands.
The Cameron Dramatic Club stages Ghost Bird at the Knights of Columbus Hall tonight with the Lions visiting. Special arrangements are being made to entertain guests from Bryan Caldwell Brenham Houston Galveston Beaumont and Port Arthur for the April 24 meeting in Cameron. The business women met at the Country Club Tuesday night after a treasury report showing surplus funds. Joe Relond provided music and 12 games followed the business session.
The death of S E E Brogdon’s mother occurred at her Winsboro home after a sudden illness. The Brogdons are longtime Texas pioneers, and friends in Cameron and the area mourn this family’s loss.
Jury verdicts favor the defendant in B S Jeanes vs Cameron Compress over logs burned in October 1920. State vs Edwin Herd found guilty of burglary with two years in penitentiary. Appeal to Court of Criminal Appeals follows denial of new trial. Three related cases pending. two juveniles sent to Statesville, another to the penitentiary. Defendant from Cleburn. Marvin B Simpson of Fort Worth leads Norris case defense. Next week jurors are on call but cases are continued.
A correction clarifies that J H DuBois has no involvement with the filling station under construction by Mr Batte for Mr Walachak of Buckholts. The Magnolia Petroleum Company is not connected to the project.
The Cameron Methodist Church marked Easter with a pre Easter evangelism campaign six weeks prior and welcomed fifty four new members at Easter services. A large choir performed Easter music despite heavy rain and twenty five new members joined on profession of faith. The pastor urged all Methodists to enroll and view Easter as a new era for the church.
J W Gilstrap from Pecos City will ride the Red Tate Bull owned by George Coy of Sugarland at Lawless Green Field. The event on Saturday April 14 features a small admission charge and draws local interest. Gilstrap is a noted rider known in the area.
Mrs W A Copus has purchased the Specialty Shop from Mrs Hearrell and announces new stock arriving. She has moved her office from the electric shop to the Specialty Shop and invites friends to visit the store location.
Chas C Dockery announces his bid for Constable of Justice Precinct 1 in the Democratic Primary in July. He emphasizes equal rights, a fair and law abiding tenure, and asks for votes and support from voters and friends in the Cameron area.
