Carpenter Praised by Army for War Time Aid

John W. Carpenter of Texas Power & Light Company receives a War Department commendation from Colonel G F Lewis Engineering Corps for participation in the Utility War Time Aid Program. Milam County Beef Calf Show Set for April 19 in Cameron

The Annual Milam County Beef Calf Show will be held in Cameron on April 19 with 40 calves shown by 4-H and FFA members. Judge will be W J Ross of Falls County. Calves will be shipped to Fort Worth for sale after the event as part of the Food for Victory program.

Buckholts Raises 327.54 for Red Cross War Fund

Buckholts has a total of 327.54 for the War Fund of the American Red Cross, reported by F. G. Blake county drive director. Previously Buckholts and nearby communities totaled 700, now separated amounts show Buckholts alone. Red Cross officials praise Buckholts for the effort.

Legion Here Sponsor Cigarettes for Soldiers in Cameron

The American Legion Post in Cameron announced a drive to send 2000 packages of cigarettes to American soldiers in North Africa and Australia. Each 1000 package case costs $50 and will be sold by R J Reynolds at 5e per pack, with messages printed from Cameron, Texas on each package. Subscriptions totaling about $25 have already been received, and the Post urged public donations at the Herald or through Commander Jim McGoldrick.

Master Sergeant Reynolds Reaches Top NCO Rank

Master Sergeant James A. Reynolds, foster son of Mr and Mrs W H Houston of Cameron, has been advanced to the highest non commissioned grade at the Air Depot Training Station, Stinson Field San Antonio. Reynolds enlisted December 5 1942 and now serves in the repair squadron of the 28th Air Group at Stinson Field alongside his wife Mrs Wille Reynolds of San Antonio. Milam county men in the service commend his record as the area’s finest.

Local Air Base Mechanic Transfered To Tampa Texas

Staff Sgt Graham McLerran, a Yee High School graduate and Milam county native, is transferred to Tampa Texas to join the army air corps as a mechanic. Enlisting in October 1941, he trained at Wichita Falls and Brooks Field before moving to South Plains Field, where two ratings elevated him from Corporal to Sergeant. He served ten months at Lubbock prior to the Tampa assignment and earned the Technical Sergeant rating. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John McLerran.

Albert Collins Elected President of Cameron Rotary

Albert Collins, a charter member, was elected Wednesday by Cameron Rotary Club directors to serve as President for the coming year. He will take office June 1, succeeding Chas Hicks who becomes a club director and retiring President.

Frank Reid Elected New School Board Member

Frank Reid won a school board seat in a Saturday election. He received about 383 votes, while Drayton McLane polled around 200. Voter turnout was under 30 percent, leaving the board divided 4 to 3 as before.

Rural Aid Funds Reach Sixteen Schools for 1942 43

Final Rural Aid payments totaling 19 672 dollars were issued April 2 to sixteen schools for the 1942 43 scholastic year covering Salary Aid and state transportation and high school tuition. Seven districts were omitted due to incomplete reports, with June 1 completion expected. Rural Aid or Equalization funds require a fifty cent local maintenance tax and budgeted spending. The Marak and Elm Ridge districts plan to raise local maintenance tax to qualify next year.

Waco Lawyer John B Atkinson Dies Sudden

John B. Atkinson a prominent Waco lawyer and Milam county native died suddenly at his home in Waco at 2 p m He was a brother of Miss Lilian Atkinson of Cameron H L Atkinson of Maysfield and B P Atkinson of Austin Surviving are his widow and one daughter An obituary note states no funeral arrangements had been made and that the family formerly lived in Maysfield where their father was a pioneer merchant

Ed Gunn Addresses Business Women on Equal Rights

Judge Ed Gunn spoke to the Business and Profession Women's Club on the Emancipation of Women and the rise of voting rights. He reviewed women's wartime work and notable activities, praising the event. Miss Leila Woolley chaired, Mrs. Adolph Winfield hosted with refreshment plates.

Yar High School Graduate Joins Air Corps at Atlantic City

Edwin L Schulz, a former Yar High School graduate, is stationed in Atlantic City New Jersey with the United States Army Air Corps personnel division. He enlisted in 1942 and trained at Keans Utah and Los Angeles. Schulz, 21, married to Pauline Vickers, is the son of Mr and Mrs Herman Schulz, born and raised in Milam county.

Five Conley family rescued from cyclone wreck near Cameron

A cyclone struck two miles west of Cameron at 11 a m injuring Homer Conley his wife Mrs Homer Conley their three children and R C Conley. They were rushed to Cameron Hospital by passersby and reported resting well with Loraine Conley 3 the most seriously hurt from torn leg and head injuries.

Chamberlain's Dairy Resumes Operation

Chamberlain's Dairy will restart operations in Cameron with pasteurized milk available on Tuesday April 6 and deliveries to begin the next day. The shop will also sell Grade A raw milk after price ceilings were raised, ending a period of suspension.

Rockdale Soldier Receives Special Commendation

George Mackie of Rockdale son of Mr and Mrs T D Mackie has earned a commendation from his commanding officer for outstanding work while on foreign duty with U S forces in India China and other points. An airplane mechanic he was chosen to repair a captured Japanese fighter plane and is slated to bring the plane to the United States soon.
