Open House Honors Knights of Columbus Diamond Jubilee

The Cameron Council of the Knights of Columbus held an open house to mark the order's diamond jubilee chartered in Connecticut. Local dignitaries presented 25 year and honorary memberships with pens, celebrating 65th birthdays and long-standing good standing.

Milam County Wins Signal Lead In Milam Election

Ralph Yarborough leads Milam County with 1152 votes amid seven boxes still to count led by Thorndale. Martin Dies second with 743 votes and Hutcheson third with 39, local results mirror statewide patterns. In Cameron, Dies 291 and Yarborough 268 lead city tallies while Banks has minimal support awaiting final boxes.

Woman and two men vie for Cameron school board seat

Election week in Cameron continues through Saturday April 6 with three candidates in the race for two seats on the Cameron Independent School District board. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Yee High School with F. W. Vogelsang seeking re election joined by Dr George Bowman and Mrs Dana F Monroe who filed late.

Mosely and Mondrik Win City Council Seats in 672 Vote Election

Cameron voters elected Richard W. Moseley and Hay den Lawrence to Council Place 3 and re elected Lincoln Mondrik in Place 5 while Clifford Thompson lost Place 4. Mondrik won 417 to Kunz 237 and Thompson 226. Total 671 valid votes after one mutilation. Officials set oath April 16. turnout about 80 percent.

Measles Lead Disease Count With 38 Cases Reported

County health director Dr. John B. Bryson said 38 measles cases were reported last week, topping the list of communicable diseases. Strept throat followed with 12 cases, chickenpox six, typhoid and other illnesses also noted.

TV's Berg Calls For Conservation

Milam County Sportsman's Club heard Harley Berg, TV wildlife host of Wild Life, discuss why and how to shoot only when needed. He warned that destroying all birds would end living things within a decade and cited Texas bird diversity, deer overpopulation, and ecosystem effects. The event at Simon George Memorial Hall drew fewer attendees due to storms but gained new members and renewed club activity.

The Cameron Herald marks its 98th anniversary as Milam County’s oldest business and newspaper. It traces origins to The Cameron Centinel started in 1660 by John A. Moore, later renamed after purchases by James B Moore and evolving ownership through W. A. Bowen, W. P. Stevenson, B. H. Terrell, J. B. White, and others with Mrs. White remaining on staff.

FHA Completes Feed Program for Milam and Burleson

The Emergency Feed program in Milam and Burleson Counties concluded with 2168 grain and 895 roughage applications processed by the Farmers Home Administration office. Roy M Wright notes 70 applicants were ineligible and about 75 percent of approved feed was used, with roughly 9,968 tons of roughage and 17,959,300 pounds of grain approved totaling about $308,000 in emergency aid.

Cameron Chamber of Commerce and the City of Cameron announce a city-wide cleanup and paint-up campaign from April 15 to 20. Ben Magness says the effort will boost tourism and attract industry, noting each 100 industrial jobs can generate about 250 000 dollars in local payroll and multiply turnover through local commerce.

State Calls For Bids On Milano US 79 SH 36 Project

The Texas Highway Department seeks bids for a 12 181 mile resurfacing from the Y south of Cameron to US 79 at Milano plus three miles east of Milano. Work covers US 79 and SH 3 with a bid opening at 9 a m on April 20. Specifications available from resident engineer Joe G Hanover Hearne.

Milam County Licenses Sell 7 188 Plates So Far

County Assessor Walter White reports 7 188 license plates sold to Milam County residents. Of these 5 280 are passenger cars, 1 054 are commercial vehicles, and 94 are farm trucks licensed to date.
