Milam Red Cross Campaign Falls Behind Goals

Milam County Red Cross fundraising lags with only 4000 collected toward a 8000 target and 850 members enrolled of 1700. Jack W. Prescott warns blood program relies on the drive, noting 1953 benefits valued at over 10000 dollars and 300 pints of blood used locally with additional donations used outside the county. He urges residents to contribute through the community campaign or by sending donations to Rockdale.

Sons of the Republic To Organize In Salado Meeting

All men eligible for membership are invited to attend an organization meeting of the Sons of the Republic of Texas at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Sterling Robertson home in Salado. State SRT officers will assist with organization and charter. Eligibility requires proof ancestors were Texas residents before 1846. A pre-meeting dinner at Stage Coach Inn Salado is set for 6:30 p.m. with a no host arrangement.

Rabies Found in Milam County This Week

Milam County records one rabies case in animals for the week ending Friday March 26. Dr John B Bryson, director of Milam County Health Unit, also notes twenty measles cases, half of last week’s total, plus fifteen street throat, one mumps, one anebiosis and two gonorrhea cases.

Death of G R Kirschke Near Ad Hall at 78

G R Kirschke, 78, died at his home near Ad Hall at 8 am Wednesday March 31. He is survived by four daughters Mrs J H Wilkins Ad Hall, Mrs Clara Crawford Houston, Mrs Margaret Deal Galveston, Mrs Dorothy Lagrone Cameron, and two sons Tom Kirschke and Irvin Kirschke Buckholts. Honor Court Highlights Scout Ranks and Sponsor Need

Milam County Farmers Urged to Release Unused Cotton Acres

Milam County Farm Bureau calls on cotton growers with unused allotments to release acreage to the county ASC committee. Released land counts as planted if cotton grew on the farm in 1952 1953 or 1954, preserving the county and state acreage base. Deadline is April 16 1954. Official premeasurement of marketing quota crops will be offered at farmer cost to offset plow up or underplanting losses.

Reverend Jim McKeown announced about 14 women have donated time to the Cameron Library project. Mary Boyd will conduct preliminary instruction while Jaycees painted the rooms and curtains hang ready for readers. More volunteers are needed after four o clock to help finish shelving and book access.

Johnson Announces Candidacy For Lt Governor

C T Johnson a 43 year old Democrat visited the city this week to campaign for Lt Governor. He calls for a state telephone commission to regulate rates aiming to cut high Southwestern Bell charges. Little Leaguers Plan Season At New Diamond Site

Little Leaguers and sponsors anticipate a season with a new stadium and lights. The field east of the school, purchased by the School Board from A W McCullin and Mr Eickenhorst, will also extend the school track. Brantley Auto Sideswiped Near Burlington

Leland D. Brantley of Cameron avoided injury when his car was sideswiped Sunday evening one mile south of Burlington by a pickup driven by a Mexican man not yet located. The accident remains under investigation with no injuries reported to Brantley or the two boys in his vehicle.

Completion Planned for New Highway 86 Linking Cameron and Temple

State Highway Engineer Walter Ruff says the partly rebuilt Highway 86 from Cameron to Temple is 99 percent complete. The 24 foot black topped road ties into Highway 190 thirteen miles from Temple and eliminates dead man curves while cutting hills for better sightlines. A June opening is expected weather permitting, about a year from the project start.
