Cambridge Public School Association Endorses Hiring Rules

The Cambridge Public School Association fully suggests that no person be appointed as assistant superintendent without prior approval by the school committee after thorough investigation. Candidates must pass a competitive examination prepared and scored by independent examiners. Political considerations must have no role in the appointment.

License Commission Actions Highlight Liquor Hearings

Liquor hearings dominated the License Commission meeting with several requests decided or postponed. John J. Concannon sought a six day restaurant license for 39 41 Boylston street, while UNO ME at 851 Cambridge street got a change to a six day all alcohol restaurant license. A tavern license at Broad Street near Columbia Street was withdrawn for being too near dwellings. New E R A Projects Provide Employment in City

The E R A funds support three projects employing 325 men. A Sacramento sewer line from Mass Avenue to Oxford Street includes 24 inch storm pipes and 12 inch sanitary pipes with 109 workers. Hayward Street resurfacing adds concrete pavement and replaces sidewalks and curbstones while Flagg Street resurfacing adds asphalt and granite curb work.

Foley Verbal Attack on Mayor Taxes Sparks Council Row

In a lively City Council session Rep Councillor Foley launched a sharp rebuttal of Mayor Russell over the high tax rate. He accused the Mayor of economic fakery and questioned the purchasing department savings. The Mayor announced removal of City Electrician O Hearn pending council approval amidst prior hearings on shortages.
