Rochester reports Governor John A. Johnson dies after a lengthy illness. St Paul and Rochester observers note nationwide grief as flags lower to half mast. Earlier Mayo doctor notes no hope, governor remains lucid and speaks to Mrs. Johnson before passing.
The late John A. Johnson of Minnesota rose from poverty as the son of Swedish immigrants to govern the state and become a prominent Democratic figure. Despite attacks about his father, he was elected governor in 1904 and re elected, with the public manhood of Minnesota praised for supporting opportunity. He died after an appendicitis related operation.
Rochester Minnesota September 21 at 2 a m Governor Johnson lies near death after a night of hopelessness. Dr Mayo stated at noon there was no hope and death would follow within an hour. He remained conscious and complained of discomfort with Mrs Johnson at his side as doctors and nurses fought to prolong his life during a long sleepless night.
A horse pulling a buggy north of Claysville dragged Mrs. Ray Pattison and Mrs. John Cogle about fifty yards Monday morning. Both women were freed. Mrs. Cogle was unconscious for nearly an hour and Mrs. Pattison, just recovering from typhoid fever, was in critical condition with her clothes torn.
In Saxonburg Pennsylvania on September 21 a Tarentum lumber dealer James Moser owned auto ran at high speed on a country road and rolled over throwing five occupants from the vehicle who were badly injured.
Fragmentary reports from Southern Louisiana and Mississippi describe a severe tropical hurricane along the gulf coast last night. It damaged shipping and buildings, upset railroad traffic, and at least one death is reported with ongoing assessments from Biloxi Scranton and nearby points.

Robbers entered the Derwent Ohio postoffice and Pennsylvania station last night. A west window was smashed and contents torn but no money or stamps taken. The station loss was only a small sum. No clues to the culprits.
Commander Peary and his party on the Roosevelt arrived in Sydney N S causing a townwide pause in business. A cheering crowd welcomed the expedition as Mayor Wallace Richardson and city officials hosted the party. Mrs Peary and children greeted him aboard the yacht Sheelah and remained aboard overnight.

Dr Frederick A Cook, Peary rival in polar exploration, is forty four, a Sullivan County New York native. He first Arctic experience came with Peary in 1891 92, shaping a plan to reach the pole. He joined the Belgian Antarctic expedition and climbed Mount McKinley in Alaska, and has written books about both journeys.
President Taft declares renewed war on railroads from the Capitol steps. He demands greater congressional power for the ICC and accuses lines of discriminatory rates and overcapitalization that stifle competition and raise prices. Steubenville Ohio September 21 Unity Oil company drilled a giant gas gasser near Rush Run. The well produced ten to twenty million cubic feet daily and ignited from the boiler burning through last night. The rig was destroyed but no injuries were reported.
