The Northwest part of the North Side being thu outskirts of that Purt of the City remains. This however is so Small a part As to furnish but Little House room for the sufferers. The burned District covers about five Square Miles. Two dead bodies were found by our reporter but Many others Are reported. The general scene is one that can rot be described fails the whole District covered wit i people searching for what is 1 it and for what was buried in the Earth to keep it from the flames As was done by some. A new a Deb. Yesterday afternoon when fire was Rushing southward along Michigan and Washburn avenues like a take horse and firemen Atid people weit Paul Jed a new Leader suddenly burst upon the scene. Ger Mal Shet Idin fighting who can fight rebels or flames Spra ,2 upon a fir engine and made one of those speeches for which he is noted. He told the people that if they would save the City the fire line must be broken by Gunpowder the buildings must be blown up and if they would go to Woik systematically he would assist them. The effect electrical. The crowd recognizing the hero of to Many Battle Fields and having i Faith in Hia leadership replied with i Long Hurrah and acting under the general s orders in a few minutes so Many building had been blown up that the tire line was broken and the Southern portion of the City waa saved from destruction. The wind. The Palm of devastation must be accorded to the wind. Had it n t been for the Force of that Clement the ravages would have been cheeked before they became Seri Ous. Binning cinders filled the air flying half a mile in some in stances. The extent and direction of the fire were both determined by the wind. Bank vaults. As to the value of real estate it is now e.. Ely indeterminate because it is impossible to Devine where the future business Center will be. The latter will de Pend on the location selected by the leading business houses which arc Arcady in consultation. Banks. There is not a Bank left in All Chicago unless it be some Little House Remote from what was the rentier of business the actual is of the Bankers can not be computed even approx mite y in any one Case one thing we arc authorized to stale positively. The Banks will resume regular business in a few Days. The ja1i. Prisoners. The most painful rumours prevailed on the streets that some forty or titty prisoners had perished in the burning of the court House jail but it has been ascertained that this report is with out the least foundation. There were on sunday evening confined in the jail about nil qty prisoners. All of whom were Given free exit when it become apparent that the court House would Burn the jail doors being thrown wide open at about 2 o clock yesterday morning All of the prisoners embraced the present Opportunity to escape and immediately left for various parts of the City with the exception of George Dresser water. Is one of the most deplorable and alarming features of the situation As in the event of oter occurring in tiny part of the cily Dis Tant from the River or Lake the most deplorable result would be inevitable for Domestic purposes persons must seek for some time to come Jet their water Supply from and Artesian Wells. It is most fortunate now that in the Days of Chicago s Prosperity so Many Artesian Wells were sunk which will now be of inestimable value in supplying the demands of the Community. The Board of Public works As sure the citizens that nothing that human exertion can accomplish will be omitted to rebuild the water works and it is hoped to have this most desirable object accomplished in two weeks from the present. All the Coal tards Burn the immediate organization of a local Relief society even while the City Wai burning is character Islic of Chicago and the Good such a magnanimous step will a com a is incalculable. Every Coal Yard in the City is burned and the Supply of All fuel except Wood which is scarce and extremely dear is Cut off. As Winter is close of hand and thousands of sufferers by the fire will be without Money or fuel it is suggested that sup plies of fuel be sent to Chicago by those Relief societies of other cities and towns it o desire to Aid in the great work of Benevolence. Thou Sands of those who have lost their All bad their Winter supplies of fuel stored ready for use but it proved Only a Means of disaster and additional discomfort to them by adding fuel to the lawyers. As a specimen of what the Legal profession of this City lies lost i May state that general b. N. Eld Ridge of the firm of Eldridge Tourtelotte the attorn is for Field Leiter co., lost All his papers not a scrap left alter having practice Law for fourteen years in Chicago and in the office. There is not a Law office nor a Law Library left in Chicago except the few Small duplicate libraries at the residences of the leading lawyers. There is not a paper showing that there is n suit pending in any of the six courts of record in Cooke county including the Federal court. There is not an incl Ciment in existence in else county against any one not a judgment not a petition in bankruptcy in the Federal courts. In the duplicate files that the lawyers kept in their offices of important cases arc All gone. A Tew Inay have escaped by being taken to the houses for sunday or night work we May add that there Are in Chicago about five Loudred Law yers. Elevators. Five of our Large elevators fell victims to the flames in the great fire but there is a sufficient Quan Tity of Grain in those left standing to Supply All present demands. In Irrig Eluned. Several of our crafts acre burned in the River and in the dry docks the Schooner Stampede Nas one and the bark Glenbeulah another. In demand offices stores Halls and in fact anything in the shape of buildings. In the West and South divisions nearly All Are rented. Dead bodies. At Union Street station All is Bustle and activity sending dead bodies to no. 64 Milwaukee Avenue to an undertaker who is employed by the City to take of them not less than one Hundred persons have been killed and it is thought that the number of dead bodies will yet far exceed this. The desolation is the most com plete Ever witnessed. The in Tensity of the heat was terrible huge blocks of Stone were Crim bled to dust. The foundations disappeared almost to the Bottom Stone. The Walls were licked up As though of pasteboard and the huge beams of Iron were warped and disappeared like Straw. The vaunted fire proof structures offered almost As Little resistance As the humblest shanty and went in the common ruin. Incendiaries. In the South and West divisions of the tily numerous arrests have been made of fiends in human shape who were caught in the act of setting buildings on fire. It one instance a Man observed two of these devils about casting balls Satin ated with kerosene and lighted into his House on Wentworth Avenue South of Twenty fifth Street. He it once seized an a and split one of them from ids head Down. The other escaped a policeman saw a Man who had threatened to set a building on fire and he was about to Nocom push his Devilish act when he Drew his revolver and shot him through the heart. A narrow escape. A we1 k or two ago a Peutl Siuai Olio resides at the Corner of Burn Side and thirtieth streets Dis charged Bia servant a girl Aloiv sixteen years of age. Last eve Ning about 8 o clock this Gir crept to the barn of the gentleman which was in the rear of tic House and set it on fire. The barn was in the midst of a densely built neighbourhood and the buildings were of Aud As dry As tinder la almost an instant the entire Santt i1 of Al Imes. The Inha ii lands were filled with terror and for a moment were paralysed. Tin v immediately re covered and set to work Wuh r will to extinguish the flames. A 1 Jacent buildings were torn Down and although a fire Steamer was on the spot and water was plenty it was useless As there was no Hose. Water was passed it to pails and in a Little time the fire was extinguished. The girl was arrested and is now confined in the Twenty. Second Stilet station. This narrow escape so alarmed the neighbourhood that a meeting of citizens was held in the engine House Corker of Burnside and thirty first streets and a private patrol established and nil night Long they walked the to the Teeth and fully determined to use their weapons should incendiaries be discovered. The engine was kept in readiness All night Bose procured and the people in the neighbourhood slept in comparative Quirt. The Loea of water is the greatest disaster to lift people. People Are coming and going to the Lake and River with pails and tubs. The authorities have ordered that All Artesian Wells around the City be connected with the Mains and fire engines arc pouring water from the into the Adams Street Reservoir. It is anticipated that the water works will soon be in operation As the engines Are not greatly injured. Incidents. During the prevalence of the great conflagration there were Many occurrences which were grimly humorous. While exodus from the burning South Side going on Over Lake and Randolph Street Bridges an undertaker rushed Over with a part of Hie Stock. He was accompanied by three or four boys each of whom grasped in his arms a Mournful suggestion that some thing of the kind must be saved for those Tio did not survive the Ter Rible visitation. Little is left of the City except suburbs and these were All Day yesterday so crowded with Fugi Tives and their fragmentary Furni j Ture in every fantastic every out lending Avenue looked like a Camp. All through the Rainy i night tens of thousands held their weary Oliac. In one place Alons the sidewalk our reporter saw a family gathered wit i their Sisu Terete household i goods. The father sat on a i of i weeping like a child. The braver Mother had made a Little tire in thu grass Aud was i so no meat 1 and the children were plating hide j and Seok among the baggage. Every vehicle was Dragoon so into service yesterday. Going on a Trot up Wabash i Avenue thread ing its Way among Fie Carls we saw a , beat intr two Happer children within the Pla de parallel bars with a woman on the or her s. Seat and a rocking chair hoop skirts and household utensils tied across the narrow lop. One of the most sadly Mournful sights of that fearful night was the burning of Wells Street Bridge the spectacle was witnessed by Cornea Nathely few on Fie West s Ide of Tho the North and South branches see it. The Structure caught fire almost simultaneously on both cuts but on account of the wind the South end burned much More rapidly than the North. This caused the upper end to Over balance tic other the Bridge then tipped into the Waler and stood projecting at an Angle of about sixty degrees. As soon however is the fire had undermined the Bridge support the whole Struc Ture careened turned a Complete somersault and Tell into the water its burning ribs whirling weirdly through the air. The Lake Shore. Perhaps the most fearfully thrilling scene of the great conflagration was that in the Eastern Section of the North division. When it became apparent that All Hope of saving the City was lost after the flames had pushed Down to the main Branch of the River the Citi zeus of the North Side Over to Sec the main theater of the fire thought it time logo into their own division and save what they could. Jaccoi Dinely a if beat a rapid Retreat toward the Tuii Tiel and Bridges. The former of these thoroughfares was impassable at 3 o clock. Clark Street Hud not been open for some Lime state Street was in a Blaze cud to the other. Re a Street Bridge was now the Only of getting away from the Soti i and Over that affrighted fugitives poured in thousands. Their flight was cot quicker than was Advance of the Dames. The latter jumped the River with s swiftness and Isu Long the Northern Section from Dearborn Street to the North Branch like lightning.
