Key West Fla Oct 12 martial law proclaimed by the mayor as the hurricane devastates the southern Florida coast. Property damage estimated at 2 000 000 with hundreds of buildings wrecked and looting suppressed by guards. Entire east coast of Florida faces severe impact and many vessels remain at anchor as chaos grips the city.
An anarchist demonstration in Los Angeles led to several arrests of ringleaders and threats of death against police. Mexican revolutionists joined the crowd and a shouted insult to Taft sparked the clash. A letter warning them of a short life followed as authorities took special precautions for the president.
Secretary of State Knox told Charles Crane Minister Designate to China to resign at once. Crane, who was near sailing from San Francisco, was summoned to Washington to explain alleged responsibility for a newspaper dispatch revealing confidential U.S. positions on the China Japan treaty talks.
Independent petitions are being filed with the Board of Elections from several townships and villages for school board seats and an individual office. In Cambridge petitions nominate Judge J. A. Troette W. A. Blackburn and Dr. F. M. Mitchell for school board and John M. Allen for Assessor of Real Property.

Lawrence Kansas October 12 Scores of armed citizens search for Earl Bullock an eighteen year old desperado who robbed the state bank at Eudora and may have fatally wounded Policeman Wilson Pringle as deputies and local officers pursue him from his mother's home Bullock was captured in Eudora by Deputy Woods on a robbery charge and after forcing cash from the bank vault fled with $1000 before a vault rescue by two hours later.
Senecaville reports indicate a resumption of operations at the Morris Coal Co. mine within thirty days. Carpenters and blacksmiths work to clear and ready the site as 250 workers, idle for about 18 months, may return. Payroll had been 5000 to 6000 dollars biweekly, boosting local merchants.
West Virginia partly cloudy and colder Wednesday. Western Pennsylvania and Ohio show rain in the north, then clearing with fair, cool conditions and brisk west winds.
Tiverton authorities investigate a case of murder after severed legs of a woman are found in a dress suitcase among bushes. A New Bedford newspaper fragment is the key clue, suggesting the murder occurred there and legs were moved to Tiverton by vehicle within about twelve to fifteen hours. The medical examiner suspects a surgeon or student caused the amputation with a common hand saw.

A severe cyclone struck western Cuba centered on Havana on October 12. Five people were killed and about twenty five injured as buildings toppled and trees were uprooted. In Havana harbor forty to fifty small vessels were sunk or blown ashore with total damage near one million dollars.
In Columbus, Ohio, October 12 the State Supreme Court again upheld the Rose Option law in the case of Findlay saloon keeper Jacob Gassman, confirming lower court judgments. The milk bottle ordinance was also upheld as valid.
