Trial on Steunenberg Murder Halts for New Talesmen

In Boise on May 21 the Steunenberg murder trial paused to gather 59 additional tale men after progress stalled with 11 of 20 peremptory challenges used and 9 of 100 venire remaining from the prior week. Judges may adjourn to search for jurors while defense questions bias and local prejudices against Socialists.

Death of Halsey Pollock shocks Cambridge community

Sup t Hobson Reelected Cambridge School Chief for Four Years

Supt H Z Hobson was reelected to a four year term at 1800 dollars per year, an increase of 200. He has created a teacher training program for substitutes and expanded the high school curriculum, especially in Chemistry and Physics, with added German. He leads 49 teachers and 7 substitutes and will add staff next year. He also presides over the Eastern Ohio Teachers Association.

Ohio Plan Defeated by Royal Arcanum Members

In Honolulu on May 21 the Royal Arcanum supreme council defeated a proposition to switch 243 000 members to a constant rate called option A and voted down a plan to exclude all past supreme regents and incorporators from life membership. Separately in Honolulu Jack London’s yacht the Snark arrived after a 27 day voyage from San Francisco.

Four Burned to Death on Steamer Naomi

Grand Rapids May 21 The steamer Naomi of the Crosby Transportation Co. burned to the water's edge on a Grand Haven to Milwaukee trip. Four crew members died from burns and one passenger was fatally burned. Remaining passengers were transferred to the steamer Kansas.

Drank with Sailors Ensign Shoots Self Pending Court Martial

Ensign Alfred T. Brisbin shot himself through the lung in Santiago after a clash with police while drinking with sailors from the Tacoma. He faced possible court martial over the Santiago incident. Brisbin, an Annapolis graduate (Class of 1903) born in Idaho, was hospitalized in Santiago.

Fire Destroys Upper Story During Evening Meeting in Salesville

A mysterious blaze broke out in the upper story of Casper Enos’ house in Salesville on Saturday night. Residents, gathered for a telephone discussion, continued amid the heat until Miss Edna Enos noticed the flames and alerted the town. Firefighters halted the blaze with a back brigade, causing extensive property damage.
