In Boise on May 21 the Steunenberg murder trial paused to gather 59 additional tale men after progress stalled with 11 of 20 peremptory challenges used and 9 of 100 venire remaining from the prior week. Judges may adjourn to search for jurors while defense questions bias and local prejudices against Socialists.
The article reports the sudden death of Halsey Ray Pollock after acute poisoning, likely from a chemical substance. He was 23, son of Mrs. Jeanette Pollock, with services set at the Cambridge Baptist church. His brother Roy remains ill with a nervous breakdown, not poisoned, and is recovering.
Supt H Z Hobson was reelected to a four year term at 1800 dollars per year, an increase of 200. In Honolulu on May 21 the Royal Arcanum supreme council defeated a proposition to switch 243 000 members to a constant rate called option A and voted down a plan to exclude all past supreme regents and incorporators from life membership. Separately in Honolulu Jack London’s yacht the Snark arrived after a 27 day voyage from San Francisco.
Grand Rapids May 21 The steamer Naomi of the Crosby Transportation Co. burned to the water's edge on a Grand Haven to Milwaukee trip. Four crew members died from burns and one passenger was fatally burned. Remaining passengers were transferred to the steamer Kansas.
Ensign Alfred T. Brisbin shot himself through the lung in Santiago after a clash with police while drinking with sailors from the Tacoma. He faced possible court martial over the Santiago incident. Brisbin, an Annapolis graduate (Class of 1903) born in Idaho, was hospitalized in Santiago.
In Columbus on May 21 the Presbyterian general assembly backed a special committee report proposing executive commissions across presbyteries and synods with a moderator leading a 15 member general assembly executive committee. Critics warned it could create a Catholic like hierarchy while supporters led by Rev. James D. Moffatt defended the move as powerfully enhancing church governance.
New York May 21 Frederick A Burnham president of the Mutual Reserve Life Insurance company has been asked by the directors to present his resignation by Wednesday Failure to resign will lead to a vote to declare the office vacant and elect Archibald C Haines in his stead.
Atlanta May 21 chairman Blodgett of the State Republican league denounces the administration for appointing Democrats and lukewarm Republicans to offices and urges that no federal officeholder be a delegate to the next Republican national convention. He says a decisive fight will sweep away weaker party ties and spark a southern political revolution.
A mysterious blaze broke out in the upper story of Casper Enos’ house in Salesville on Saturday night. Residents, gathered for a telephone discussion, continued amid the heat until Miss Edna Enos noticed the flames and alerted the town. Firefighters halted the blaze with a back brigade, causing extensive property damage.
