Seven Men Rescued From Flooded Mine After 100 Hours
In Johnstown Pennsylvania on May 1 seven Berwind White miners trapped for more than 100 hours in mine 38 at Fanstville were rescued at last from a water filled heading. Stiney Rodon and Charles Ream swam 59 feet through darkness to reach them with a rescue carried out by pumped headings and a single lamp remaining. The men were found high and dry on a platform built from ties and rations were scarce but the party remained hopeful as pumps finally drained the passage.
