Tolstous argues Shakespeare is artistically flawed and ideologically deficient. He condemns Shakespeare for misrepresenting the common people and for universal character speech that flattens individuals, praising Homer while denigrating Shakespeare’s moral and social vision.
A Calumet correspondent reports Michigan sportsmen plan a wolf hunting club in Sloughton County to purchase hunting dogs and wage a systematic wolf hunt. The effort aims to curb wolves harming farms and deer, with bounties per wolf and local incentives.
Bishop Charles C. McCabe of the Methodist Episcopal Church lies near death at a New York hospital after a stroke. He was stricken while passing through the city en route to Philadelphia and was unconscious late last night. He is 63 years old.
Washington December 18 One of the few Civil War generals with conspicuous records is General Newton Martin Curtis of Ogdensburg New York known as the hero of Fort Fisher. Curtis led assaults, was wounded four times, promoted on the field, and earned a Medal of Honor for Fort Fisher. He wrote a regimental history titled From Bull Run to Chancellorsville and later moved near his northern New York birthplace. He was elected to Congress three times.
The unnamed young Curtis faced injury in battle, losing sight in one eye from a shell. In his youth he visited Springfield where Abraham Lincoln lived and heard him speak. After the address Lincoln asked Curtis his height and proclaimed six feet six inches and added a vivid comparison.
In Washington on December 18 William H Moody became associate justice of the Supreme Court, joining the full court. Former Secretary Bonaparte was introduced as the new attorney general. Oscar S Strauss was sworn in as secretary of commerce and labor amid Roosevelt’s cabinet reorganization. Metcalf and Bonaparte also took oaths for their new posts during the morning.
London December 1. It is declared in the lobbies of the Commons that James Bryce Chief Secretary for Ireland has accepted the post of British Ambassador to Washington in succession to Sir Henry Mortimer Durand. No formal renouncement is likely pending cabinet rearrangements.
In Zanesville a temporary committee finalized plans for the Past Chancellors Association of the Knights of Pythias. Officers elected include W H Manner as president and S E Lovell as secretary for the Nineteenth Pythian district covering Muskingum Goshocton Guernsey and Licking counties. About 300 past chancellors exist in the district and most are expected to join. A next meeting is set for January 6 at the same time and place.
A local reform group proposes abolishing primaries in favor of nominations by petition. They urge civil service rules for non electives, annual pay for public officers, limited legislative sessions, codified or federalized laws, and national oversight of corporations to curb abuses.
Judge Sanborn ruled in the United States circuit court that stockholders of street railroad firms acquiesced to Yerkes arrangements over Chicago Consolidated Traction bonds and cannot challenge them. The decision clears funds for a New York hospital and for an art gallery in Mr Yerkes will. Clarence Moore visits home. Thomas Cain returns from Athens. William Miser at Pleasant City and Avaco.
A North Dakota reunion brings a daughter, lost at age four, back to her father John Wood after a letter arrives from the Dakotas. The girl, now grown, says she was spirited away by her grandmother years ago while living with her mother and married in the Dakotas.
