Thirty seven informations have been entered against rioters over concealed weapons and disorderly conduct. In Schoenville the night of clashes left seven dead with more in peril as state troops reinforce the town amid fears of hidden gunfire.
The Board of Elections rejected about eight petitions for lacking ink signatures or indelible pencil marks. Secretary Carmi Thompson confirmed pencil signatures are invalid and petitions must be set aside. Despite warnings, several signatures used black lead pencil and errors occurred in this new primary method.
A freight wreck on the B and O at King's Mines Siding east of Cambridge involved the second section of east bound freight No 32 and the mine crew train under Conductor Vernon and Engineer Tom Fowler. The mine engine and two cars were shunted aside to a side track when the freight engine side swiped them. all escaped with no injuries due to quick jumping to safety and warning. The mine engine suffered heavy damage and will be sent to Newark shops for repairs.
Montevideo reports 150 to 300 deaths as the excursion steamer Columbia collides with a German vessel in the harbor. Both ships carried passengers from Buenos Ayres. The German vessel sounded an immediate alarm.
Mrs Gee F McKibben wife of Prof G F McKibben dean of modern languages at Denison University Granville Ohio died this morning from a stroke suffered last Saturday She was prominent in Ohio Baptist circles and helped furnish a home for Baptist Missionaries children opened at Granville last week
Will McMullen on patrol at his restaurant Monday night heard a noise in the kitchen. Investigating, he encountered a young owl flying inside the premises.
Pittsburg August 24 Sheriff Addison C Gumbert denies issuing orders to state troopers at Schoenville not to shoot strikers. He says troopers should protect property and use judgment, praising their restraint. He notes a potential danger but expects no repeat battle and explains car service curtailment near the plant to avoid damage.
In Chicago on August 24 the United States Circuit Court granted a permanent injunction sought by Western roads against the Interstate Commerce Commission in the Missouri River Rate case. The Commission will appeal to the Supreme Court.
Glenn H. Curtiss and M. Paulham shared honors on aviation week’s second day at Rheims France with a dramatic flight that cut the course record to 8 minutes 35 seconds amid a jubilant French crowd. Curtiss then prepared for the James Gordon Bennett Cup race on Saturday where he is favored.
Mantua Ohio August 24 Nino Saline 25 an alleged Black Hand agent was found murdered in a corn field. Marshal Snow reports the victim was on his way to compel marriage to Mrs Ernestine Darling when he was attacked and killed.
Thomas H. Love travels to the city to promote a patented coal mining device viewed as highly promising by operators and miners. A full model is on display at Judge W. H. Gregg’s office as interest grows for possible local manufacturing and distribution.
The Cambridge Works of Interstate Iron and Steel Co. resumed full operations Tuesday morning after a shutdown since August 3.
Professor William I Thomas of the University of Chicago argues that mixing white racial groups with other colors can yield a higher type of man. He favors copper American Indian and yellow Japanese traits while deeming a Negro American cross unlikely to succeed. He previously drew attention with a magazine piece on "The Mind of Woman" asserting women are mentally equal to men.
In Meadville Mississippi authorities dispatch two militia companies at Sheriff Jones request amid a feud between the Newman and Pritchard families. Ernest Newman, newly elected chancery clerk, was shot in his home during an assassination attempt. his father Dr. Newman was slain weeks earlier. A suspect fled on horseback after the window shooting.
New York Aug 24 District Attorney William Travers Jerome announced he would run for re election this fall as an independent. He said he sought guidance from the electorate and will offer himself as a candidate by petition to secure a nomination.
Secretary Morrison of the American Federation of Labor asks the commerce and labor department to probe working conditions at the Pressed Steel Car company in McKees Rocks Pennsylvania. He states strikers are not AFL members and accuses foreign labor, language barriers, and wage reductions of harming local workers.
New York Aug 24 E H Harriman reported by wireless that his condition is good and he plans an after cure at a country place He said crop conditions look bright and business conditions are safe His statement comes amid recovery rumors and market speculation about his health and activities.
E N Walters of the City Council and Cambridge Aerie of Eagles has been elected the delegate from the local Aerie to the National Convention in Omaha Nebraska in September. He will depart Friday September 10 and will be joined in Zanesville by Attorney Sherman Granger the Zanesville Aerie delegate. On return he plans visits with brothers in Oklahoma.
Atlantic City August 24 reformers intensify effort as Mayor F P Stoy refuses to accept a notice from Attorney General Wilson ordering closure of Sunday saloons. A paper signed by the attorney general was read aloud as David Johnson of the reformers delivered the document. The act could expose the mayor to misdemeanor charges for noncompliance under state law and contempt of state courts. The reformers say they will pursue arrest if he ignores the order. Stoy declines to discuss the matter. Wilson acted after reform appeals from Trenton seeking cooperation in the Sunday saloon closures.
Chief Long arrested Guy Dudley and Cecil Calvert on warrants sworn by Martin Maumee charging torturing his 14 year old son Russell Maumee. They pleaded guilty before Mayor Bradford and were fined 10 dollars plus costs. The two men and Russell’s family worked at Cambridge Glass Plant.
The weather today calls for fair skies in West Virginia with partly cloudy conditions. Ohio and Western Pennsylvania will see fair to partly cloudy skies with light to moderate south to southwest winds.
