The Star route trials opened in Philadelphia on the 20th with McDevitt of Chicago facing conspiracy to defraud the Government in Texas routes. Wiley testified for the defense.

Melville was taken from Sharon Hill to the State Asylum for the Insane at Norristown after a certificate signed by two doctors declared her not of sound mind, allegedly due to alcoholism. Her husband, Engineer George W. Melville, described a troubled marriage and financial strains, noting his salary and allowances for the family while he served in the Asiatic Squadron.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing advances on gold certificates in several denominations up to 10 000 dollars. The design features portraits of Garfield Silas Wright Benton Lincoln Madison and Jackson with denomination counters and ornate backwork. Orders total 171000 sheets valued about 150 million dollars.
