She also uncovered clothing and jewelry on Mrs. Somers aboard the Werra, with bracelets, breastpins and earrings, and a bribe attempt to retain the items.
Early Friday a group attempted to rob the grave of Maxwell the murderer hanged in St Louis. Watchman John Shevlin, paid two dollars nightly by an unknown employer, fired at the intruders at Calvary Cemetery as three men fled to a waiting wagon leaving a spade and rope. No suspects found.
Salt Lake City obituary notes General Horace S. Eldridge superintendent of Zion's cooperative mercantile institution dies at 72. A Brigham Young appointee in 1860, he served in the Territorial Legislature in 1855 and held county and Territorial offices. A Mormon convert of 52 years, he left a wealthy estate with real estate and livestock. survived by five wives and many descendants.
In New Orleans on September 8, Lane cotton mills report a new heavy cotton cloth called osna bergo as a substitute for cotton bagging. It is strong durable and less inflammable than jute. The shift could end imports of jute and spur a Southern bagging industry. Lane mills have rewoven all looms to produce this cloth to meet planter demand if jute remains costly or scarce.
Dr. McKane head of Emergency Hospital horsewhipped Dr. H B Deale resident physician of Garfield Hospital after a confrontation at the hospital doorway. Deale had recently criticized McKane and had been formerly his assistant. The incident occurred as McKane prepared to ride a horse outside the hospital.
The State Capitol Board led by the Governor and state officers unanimously refused to receive the building saying it does not meet contract terms. It cites copper roof leaks and other defects while noting Farwell & Taylor would receive 8 million acres of land, of which all but 300,000 acres have title, held in trust until full contract compliance.
