Okey and Arnold Green were named for Supreme Court judge, and Leopold Kiefer led a four-man field for the Board of Public Works amid disagreement and final party unity declarations.
The 1899 summer season shows an unparalleled run of disasters with cyclones and violent storms causing 299 deaths, plus 287 more from lightning. Other fatal risks include 222 by fire, 828 by drowning, 1,067 on railroads, 51 from collapsing buildings, and 94 in mines, totaling 2,?00. Over two thousand deaths are blamed on carelessness.
A county wide system assigns every street a name and divides each mile into ten blocks. Each block has two numbers for its sides and houses receive the block number. If two houses share a block they are marked with letters such as 10 A and 10 B. The system allows locating a house by its number indicating distance from the starting point with ten blocks per mile.
Chicago switchmen ended the Yard strike with both sides agreeing to follow union rules and company appeals for grievances. Stock Yards men resumed work, new hires replace those who refused orders, and yard officers may be promoted from the ranks. New York arbitration news followed, with officials noncommittal on freight claims, while Burrago reports a requested conference with Superintendent Toucey remains unanswered.
Hale and Norcross stockholders accuse the company and directors of a three year scheme that allegedly appropriated two million dollars. M W Fox leads 140 stockholders in a formal letter to the company secretary detailing suspected fraudulent conspiracy involving mill owners and directors.
Jefferson City Mo Aug 30 Fred Wittrock alias Jim Cummings famed Pacific express robber is said dying in prison from heart disease. Rumor says he gave a written confession naming unrecovered money. He and two accomplices robbed a Missouri Pacific train near St Louis in 1886 stealing over 160000. most money recovered. Wittrock later sentenced to ten years.
In Fempisque eight prisoners were captured, five shot as prisoners of war. At Jutiapa on August 6, fifteen of 112 prisoners captured July 21 were executed as POWs. The account notes Salvadorean actions match this treatment of Guatemalan soldiers.
A cyclone with lightning and hail struck the south side of Colpwaten Michigan on Thursday night. The wind path stretched about 120 yards and demolished a three story building 180 by 40 feet owned by Coldwater Road Cart Company filled with 818000 in materials and finished work. A windmill near the depot toppled over pumps. the wheelbarrow factory roof was torn from its frame and carried eighty yards away. Orchards suffered heavy damage.
J J Brown vice president of Farmers bank of Broken Bow Neb began a business trip to St Joseph Mo ten days ago. Word reached his family that he arrived here then all correspondence stopped. A week passed with no word prompting a telegram to the St Joseph Trust Company to locate him. A careful search found no trace of him.
Sept 1 report from WasutiGron describes a 185 ton traveling crane under test at the navy yard. It lifts 110 tons on a 62 foot span with a 40 foot hoist and a five ton main pulley, costing about 100000 pounds and drawing engineers from across the country.
Washington September 1 The resignation of J S Clarkson son First Assistant Postmaster General takes effect end of month ending an 18 month term begun March 1889. He will likely become president of the Judson Pneumatic Railway Company and oversaw 26 675 fourth class postmasters and 5 660 new post offices, plus 2 217 presidential appointments.
Frederick Kimball the paying teller of the People's Savings Bank Worcester Mass fled April 2 with 43500 in bonds and cash to Europe with Estelle Lebon. Detectives arrested them in New York aboard the La Bretagne after Lebon identified the man. Bonds were found sewn in Kimball's undershirt. cash was spent. Awaiting Massachusetts requisition.
Fires of incendiary origin started in six Brooklyn locations Saturday night injuring several people and leading to the arrest of two men on suspicion. Two blazes began in crowded tenement cellars and a 1:30 am Sunday fire burned three occupants as they fled. Overall loss was small due to prompt extinguishing, with occupants narrowly escaping death.
