A lighthearted wartime anecdote from Texas Siftings describes an Austrian lieutenant discovering a dead drunk private and a baffled comrade. Robert Ray Hamilton filed for divorce on grounds his wife Evangeline Hamilton formerly Evangeline Steele deceived him before their 1889 marriage. He alleges she claimed she would be a mother and that a child was born, while he now believes the child was not his. The complaint was accepted for service by publication with summons to be published in three newspapers and mailed to May's Landing and Tren ton State Prison.
Fifteen persons drown as the trans Atlantic steamer Geographie collides with the sailing vessel Minnie Swift off St Pierre Miquelon. Two boats from the steamer with about thirty five occupants are missing. The Minnie Swift sank in two minutes. The captain and fifteen others were saved by the schooner Sister Bell.
In Chicago on October 4 the coroner opened an inquest into the death of Michael O Connor, the seventh Rock Island wreck victim. Witnesses testified, the jury adjourned to Saturday, and engineer Twombley’s bondsmen surrendered him. Bonds set at 15000 dollars each for Twombley and fireman Lecloche, who were jailed. Officials may face grand jury on possible criminal negligence for trusting an unfit man with passengers.
Helena Montana October 4 vigilante slogans 3 7 77 appeared on street corners and in evening papers amid four recent fires in the business district. Fires started with oil-soaked rags. all were quickly controlled. Authorities link the arson to a Northwestern gang blamed for fires in Butte and elsewhere. Special police patrols warn of lynching if a culprit is caught.
A lengthy list details new pastor assignments for the East Ohio Conference Akron and Barnesville and surrounding districts. Names include J. H. Conkle J. F. Fisher Y. Kennedy W. W. Webster N. B. Stewart H. D. Stauffer G. W. Holmes J. R. Hoover J. K. Shaffer M. W. Dal las J. Hollingshead Painesville W. H. Haskell and many others across Cleveland Cambridge Steubenville and Youngstown districts with several to be supplied. The updated lineup covers First churches circuits charitable roles and chaplains with Mt Union and Bible society links noted.
Joseph and Samuel Devault were arraigned before Mayor Price on charges of stealing carpenter tools and bound over to court in 500 dollars each. A witness identified a pair of boots belonging to L Bay on Joseph Devault, and the boots were returned to the owner while Ray bought Devault a pair of shoes before imprisonment.
Nearly sixty distinguished delegates from North, South and Central America gathered at the State Department for the opening of the Three Americas Congress. Secretary Blaine urged peaceful, equal, and broad intercommunication, invited delegates to visit American regions, and the body elected Blaine president with meetings set to November 18 at the Wallach mansion.
At the National Board of Steam Navigation session Captain Dravo urged Congress to make Monongahela River navigation free. Officers were elected with J. W. Miller of the Stonington line named president, E. B. Wood, A. F. Churchman, A. Lisle, and J. W. Bryant filling vice president, treasurer, and secretary roles. New York chosen for the next meeting place.
Late Monday night hunters in Springfield County discover a camp of a husband, wife and seven children, destitute after weeks of wandering. The derelict family subsisted on sour milk and potatoes. the father fell ill, their clothes frayed, and a sixteen year old daughter with typhoid fever was found in an abandoned pig pen with a baby in her arms.
Destructive prairie fires raged in McLean County fifty miles north of Bismarck driven by sixty mile per hour winds. Houses barns and granaries and their contents were destroyed. Washburn narrowly escaped as flames reached the town. Residents fought with desperation while the valley promised aid to farmers who lost everything.
At Rochester New York on a lift bridge a 1500 pound trough of pig iron fell through a street car roof injuring several passengers. John Metzler seriously injured. Mary Birmingham gravely hurt. Rev George Gouth, his wife and others also injured. A tragic accident occurred Friday afternoon on West Avenue canal bridge during lift operation.
Wixnirra Man October 5 reports show extreme food and water shortages along the Manitoba border. Dry conditions and burned prairie reduce hay stocks, forcing some ranchers to offer cattle for sale to avert death. Minister McKenzie Powell tours the frontier to curb horse cattle and whisky smuggling, with patrols covering over 800 miles.
In Raereu North Carolina on October 5 the James Boyle trial for outraging Geneva Whitaker enters its third day. Defense witnesses claim Boyle was sober on May 11 while prosecution witnesses describe bruises and finger marks on Geneva and assert her character was excellent. Prosecution says Boyle lied about advances and consent as the case proceeds toward closing arguments.
About fifty people gathered at the Workingmen's Institute in Boston on Thursday night, joining single tax men, Nationalists, Knights of Labor, trades unionists, Socialists, Greenbackers and independents. They censured both old parties, praised James A. Miller of Worcester for his Democratic convention conduct, adopted resolutions, and nominated him as a labor advocate candidate for governor.
Judge Bond of the United States Circuit Court issued a warrant for the arrest of the negroes tied to the Navassa Island murders near the West Indies. Marshal Cairnes reported he could not make arrests, and the case will be sent to President Harrison for action. The island falls under U S jurisdiction since its 1856 discovery by Captain Peter Duncan.
