Indictments in Navy Voucher Case and Federal Appointments
In Washington Criminal Court on the 20th the Grand Jury returned five indictments against G. A. Whittaker and six against John W. Drew and Daniel Corrigan for presenting false vouchers to the Navy Department from 1882 to 1883 totaling $10,000. Several receivers of public moneys at District Land offices resigned, and Indian Agent L. J. Miles also resigned. Postoffice envelope bids show major price reductions, with over 30,000,000 envelopes used last year. President’s appointees include collectors, a customs surveyor, U.S. attorneys, and a U.S. marshal.
