Longue Pointe Lunatic Asylum Fire Kills Dozens

A fire at the Longue Pointe Lunatic Asylum near Montreal destroyed the facility and caused extensive loss of life. Authorities estimate about fifty inmates died, with most victims among the upper wards and several nuns perishing while aiding residents. Escaped patients and rescue efforts followed as firemen fought the blaze and sisters moved to save survivors.

Veteran Journalist C. F. Clarkson Dies in Dubuque

Hon C F Clarkson aged about 103, father of Assistant Postmaster General Clarkson and R P Clarkson of the State Register, died at 12 15 this morning. Born in Maine in 1810, he moved to Indiana in 1820, to Iowa in 1855, served in the State Senate in 1863, and spent the last twenty years as agricultural editor of the State Register.

Harriman Hops Toward San Francisco in 65-Day Walk

J S Harriman continues his cross country trek from Wabash Indiana toward San Francisco for a $10,000 wager. He reached Lamar Col 7 PM Monday, 1498 miles from the start and 820 ahead of schedule. Since Dodge City he has logged 150 miles in a day and a half, averaging 70 miles per 24 hours, despite a 12 pound loss. His route proceeds via Lajunta and Trinidad as he shows no fatigue.

Broad storm toll in Ohio Kansas Missouri reports

Heavy hurricanes cause destruction across Ohio Kansas and Missouri with multiple towns hit. Akron accounts describe a tornado interlacing homes businesses and residents injured including the Kiplinger family and others. Cedar Valley Cedar County and Grand Isle hail damage also noted with wide property losses.

McCalla court martial record sent to Navy Dept

The record of the McCalla court-martial has reached the Navy Department and Judge Advocate General Remy is preparing a full synopsis for the Secretary of the Navy. The Secretary will decide the case unless the sentence is dismissed, in which case only the President can act. Official results await the Secretary's promulgation.
