Explosion Kills Two at Lehigh Valley Coal Mine
Edward Rinker and Henry Baker were killed in an explosion at the Dassaner shaft of the Lehigh Valley Coal Company in Wilkes-Barre Pa. The shaft reaches six hundred feet deep and the head house blew apart and was hurled forty feet into the air.

Victoria B C May 4 John McAllister reports the Grappler burned near Seymour Narrows four miles from Nanaimo late Sunday night. About a hundred passengers mostly Chinamen escaped in boats as flames spread. McAllister rescued several, including the engineer and several whites. Sixty lives, at least, lost. the steamer grounded near Duncan Bay. The Alexander departed for Comox to assist.

Charles F. Freeman who four years earlier murdered his daughter in the belief he was the Christ of the nineteenth century was admitted for insanity. Indicted for murder the case was placed on file and Freeman was sentenced to Danvers Insane Hospital after court found him mentally competent.
