Republican unease grows over bank directors on Pennsylvania ticket

Convicted on horse race pools in Philadelphia cases

Ferdinand Hortsmyer and William Hortsmyer with Lewis Gilbert were sentenced for selling pools on horse races in Philadelphia with four months and six weeks imprisonment respectively. Jacop Ktrrer and Tom Caleb, George Hilliker and wife, and Nathaniel Wright drowned after being struck by a passing boat near Verplanck's Point Sing Sing. The Salvation Army in Buffalo faces street parade prohibitions. The Danish bark Alba wreck near the Shetland Islands caused fifteen deaths including Captain Toxvard and Rev L Washbeck.

Great Essex Earthquake Wrecks Colchester Homes

A heavy earthquake was felt across eastern England on the morning of the 22nd, strongest in Essex where many houses were wrecked and Langeshve Church destroyed in Colchester. Several injuries reported but no fatalities. London notes Sir Edward Watkin offers 1000 pounds to aid General Gordon rescue.

Terrific cyclone devastates Ohio villages and rail lines

A violent cyclone swept through Montgomery and Greene counties on the 27th, destroying Jamestown and Alexandersville with many dead and injured. The storm damaged the Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home in Xenia and wrecked 500 feet of railroad trestle near Carrollton, with widespread property losses and livestock destruction. A separate accident at Cleveland left one man drenched after leaping from a viaduct. Nationwide banking data show declines in loans and deposits, while political updates cover New York Republican convention debates and platform adoption led by Roosevelt and Arthur factions. Jamestown Cyclone Destroys Much Of Town In Ohio

A terrible cyclone struck Jamestown Ohio yesterday afternoon about five. Two thirds of the town is ruined and six killed including Stella Jones a fifteen year old girl from Esculopia Springs Kentucky Letitia Jenkins Kate Bolbler Mrs Ann Carpenter and a colored woman Mrs Stewart A son of James Paulls and several others wounded Hundreds displaced with damage estimates unavailable at this time

Illicit Still Confiscated After Years of Search

Jefferson City reports that government officers, tracking a clandestine still near Bennett's Mill Osage County about twenty miles away, finally uncovered the hidden operation Thursday morning after suspect J P Joannes betrayed the crew. Deputies Crow and Jackemi secured the appliances and brought them in.
