Mandan dispatch describes a wreck at Soapstone Cut on Sweet Brier Creek west of Bismarck. A flat car truck broke, toppling sleeping cars with thirty men each, two dining cars, a kitchen car and store car. eight killed, many burned, twenty three injured, with names Ole Johnson Thomas Wilson William Watson J McCormick and Thonas Grady among the dead.
A man, brought in by a New York officer on a charge for biting the policeman's finger, swore he was a gentle man and that the officer slipped his finger into the man's mouth. The judge doubted the tale and committed the prisoner. The note adds that Sir Sidney Waterlow, former Lord Mayor of London, has married a San Francisco belle aged thirty four.
The Chicago Tribune reports the death of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at age seventy five. Born in Portland in 1807 he taught at Bowdoin Harvard and wrote notable works translating Dante and composing poems that became American classics. He resided in Cambridge at Washington's headquarters and left a lasting literary legacy.
Washington March 22 the Adjutant General’s office released the court martial findings against Cadet Johnson C Whittaker United States Military Academy The President disapproved of the proceedings and sentence and ordered Whittaker released from arrest The court found him guilty on two charges conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman and false swearing The President cited improper admission of handwriting standards papers as the reason for disapproval and inoperative sentence.
