Spontaneous assault secures Missionary Ridge victory
An account of the 1863 assault between Orchard Knob and Missionary Ridge describes twenty thousand Union soldiers storming the ridge in a bold, improvised push. Generals Grant and Granger question who ordered the advance as Wood, Sheridan, and Bragg’s forces clash, and Union troops overwhelm Confederate defenses to claim the ridge.

Ramie Fabrics A New Industry With Growth Potential
Rewards totaling about 50000 have been offered by foreign governments to patent a ramie spinning machine. Ramie, called Chinese grass, grows four feet high and yields a fiber as strong as silk when processed. It’s used in France and England to stabilize silk and linen blends, with a machine recently developed in France to replace hand work. A factory on the Hudson River is planned to produce ramie yarns for fabric. Ramie is stronger than Russian hemp, easy to grow, and can be raised from seed in India, Egypt, and China, selling raw at about seven cents a pound.
