Grace Pearl recounts a northern mining camp memory in which a young lawyer defends an alibi for Japhet, sparking a riotous trial and a near lash punishment, illustrating harsh miners law and the ban on lawyers in early courts.

Dunwave In July 18 a tenant on Allen Vorter’s Clayton County farm near Edgewood John Nikins and his wife were killed in their sleeping room about 3 AM. Elkins was shot with a rifle hung in the house and Mrs Elkins battered and mutilated. The couple’s two sons from a former wife are suspected, the elder about two and the younger eleven. A baby slept unharmed. The son who slept in the barn woke the household with a rifle shot and found his father dead and his stepmother severely beaten. The missing $50 in the house is unlocated.
Four men died in Lincoln Nebraska after a watch dropped into a cess pool led to a rescue attempt. One man stood on a ladder and opened a pool, gas and foul air knocked him in, others fell in while attempting to save him. Victims were James Crawford Alfred Kunkler John Cleary and Frank Malone.
A Wil Bristol and Co circus performance in Milford Miss ends with the west side seats giving way injuring hundreds, another section collapses sparking panic. Five hurt seriously with broken limbs or internal injuries. show continues after cleanup. A later flood report from Columpus Tex says the Colorado river rises to thirty one feet, inundating lowlands and destroying cotton crops worth about $500000 as rain continues for three weeks.
Specimens of the first paper money issued in Siam have been sent to the Secretary of State. The issue is sanctioned by the King and is expected to benefit the country.
Reports from New York Providence and Jackson detail a balloon found sinking with the car dragging, indicating the Campbell airship used by Prof Hogan may have been swept out to sea. Hogan, born in Ann Arbor, pursued aeronautics with a string of ascents and a parachute program.

Moore negotiates the Detroit sale amid a plan to extinguish smaller yards and centralize output in one or two large facilities with new machinery. The Detroit yards produce about 89000 600 bricks annually at six to seven dollars per thousand, totaling over 490000 yearly.
In Youngstown on July 19 a mother, Mrs William Gilchrist, and her two daughters aged 2 and 5 were found drowned in a stream six miles north of the city. The husband, a local stone contractor, said goodbye last Tuesday morning as she planned a visit to relatives in Sharon Pennsylvania. She carried $550 to deposit but did not. she was seen with the children late Wednesday night and wandered aimlessly, leading to the belief she suffered a temporary insanity after losing the money.

A Times letter from Port au Prince dated July 7 reports Hippolyte assaulting outer works while Legitime drafts all riflemen. The city trembles as farms and villages burn under fire and foreigners face threats of execution. U S naval forces stand ready to seize the city if needed.
J M Clark of Toledo, representing Standard Oil, says contracts are let for the Detroit pipeline. Northwestern Gas Company will bring the line to the Southern Michigan State line, with Michigan Gas Company meeting it there. Total cost about 4 million dollars, with a plant and 100 miles of pipe to be laid in Detroit by next spring at about 1 million dollars.
Norman J. Colman former Secretary of Agriculture and editor of Colman's Rural World accepts as agricultural representative of the Scripps league to the Paris exposition. France has conferred the title officer du merite agricole and decorated him accordingly.
Laxora D. T. July 19 report a wheat shortfall in Dakota of 20 to 30 million bushels with many counties seeing near total failure. Business leaders met to plan relief measures for the needy.
Report from Grafton dated July 20 describes crop failures across the Canadian Northwest and near the Dakota line. Farmers face destitution and subsist on field mice and gophers, with emigrants recounting famine in isolated areas and emigration southward to timbered country. Some families subsisted on potatoes and turnips for months and suffered scurvy. A party near Turtle Mountain reports settlers eating livestock as famine worsens.
Arthur J. McQuade, once a New York City alderman, was tried in this county after a 1881 Broadway railroad franchise bribery indictment. Convicted previously and jailed at Sing Sing, he won a verdict of Innocent after a late Friday night jury decision, marking the first acquittal in the Boodle cases.
CuHicaco July 20 The Knights of Labor Executive Committee granted a charter to the Ship-Caulkers and Carpenters National Trade Assembly. About 5000 new members join, with 1500 already organized in Detroit Buffalo Bay City Saginaw Cleveland New York and Jersey City.
ASBURY PARK N J July 2 The state convention chose Courtlandt L Parker as chairman and adopted a platform against any compromise. Hon George Lamonte was nominated for Governor.

A collision ten miles east of Greensburg Indiana on the Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago and St Louis road between an west bound express and an east bound freight left an unknown man dead and Postal Clerk Cochran badly injured.
Kenosha Wisconsin July 20 two prominent local youths Richard Lyman son of a retired merchant and Miss Bertha Head daughter of A A Head a lumberman were drowned when their rowboat capsized on the lake. Both were active in society circles.
Albert Bulow was executed by hanging at Little Falls Minnesota shortly before 2 oclock yesterday morning for the murder of Frank Eich in November last. Minnesota newspapers printed lengthy accounts despite a new law requiring only bare hanging announcements.
Washington County Ohio July 20. The boiler of a portable saw mill engine pumping water for the new water works exploded Friday evening killing engineer Fred W. Worrell and Nathaniel Taylor of Bloomingburg and injuring eight others.
